Inuyasha 1.08

The Toad Who Would Be Prince

Kagome and Inuyasha meet Amari Nobunaga, a young man who is desperate to save Princess Tsuyu, for whom he has strong feelings. They discover that a 300-year-old toad demon holds the princess prisoner. The demon also has one of the shards of the Shikon Jewel.

Kagome, Inuyasha, and Amari sneak into the home where the toad demon holds Princess Tsuyu. The toad demon has merged with the husband of the princess. Inuyasha is ready to kill the demon but  Kagome orders him to stop because killing the demon will also kill Tsuyu's husband.

Kagome learns from Myōga that by using fire she can  drive the demon out of the husband of Princess Tsuyu. Kagome, using a candle and a bottle hairspray that she brought from her own time, hits the demon with a spray of flames that drives it out of the prince's body. Inuyasha quickly separates the demon from the shard of the Shikon Jewel.

Thoughts

Amari Nobunaga has a companion animal that looks kind of like a small monkey. It is called Hiyoshimaru. Kagome thinks that Amari Nobunaga is Oda Nobunaga when they first meet. Oda Nobunaga was a powerful leader who lived from 1534 to 1582. Amari quickly makes it clear that he comes from a different part of Japan than the better known Nobunaga.

This was a decent episode. Once again I can see the world expanding a little bit. This episode is part of the first season but it feels like the last episode was the end of a little arc that went from Kagome's first visit to the feudal era to Inuyasha gaining Tessaiga, his father's sword in the previous episode. I think that Amari is one of the recurring characters that they show in the opening credits. It looks like second character from the opening credits will be introduced in the next episode.

I am torn. I want to know big picture what's upcoming but I don't want to completely spoil it for myself. I'm still on board for now. I might take a break after a few more episodes, possibly after the 10th or 12th episode.
