Before the Opening Credits: Two years ago, Batman and Blue Beetle II (Ted Kord) break into a well guarded facility while talking about their gadgets.
After the Opening Credits: Jaime Reyes and his friend Paco argue about the origin of the Green Lantern. Jaime insists that the ring found the man who became the Green Lantern and chose him because he was a man without fear. Paco thinks that's stupid and insists that the man who became the Green Lantern is an ordinary guy who just happened to find the ring.
Blue Beetle interrupts Batman while he is in the middle of a fight with Dr. Polaris. He doesn't help Batman who defeats Dr. Polaris almost by accident. Batman leaves once the fight is done without telling Jaime much of anything other than dropping the fact that he knew the previous Blue Beetle.
Jaime does an internet search which leads him to Kord Enterprises in Hub City. He breaks in and finds the place deserted. There is lots of stuff still there including the Blue Beetle's Bug. He fires up the bug and gets it to take him to the previous Blue Beetle's last known location. He gets a call from Batman just before he gets there. Batman tries to warn him but Jaime refuses to listen.
The Bug lands on an island hidden by a cloaking device. There he finds Ted Kord, the previous Blue Beetle. Ted shows him around and tells him about his plans to help humanity. He says all the right things. Jaime is convinced and uses the power of the scarab to help power up all of Ted's robots.
Batman flashes back to a couple years before to another teamup with Blue Beetle II. Ted loaned the scarab, which he could not figure out, to another scientist. That scientist was up to no good. Blue Beetle and Batman went to retrieve the scarab. The renegade scientist wasn't ready to give it up and sicks his robots on them.
Jaime quickly discovers are not as he thought they were on the island. Batman arrives but he and Jaime are captured and locked up by Kord. Batman tells Jaime about the man he thought was Ted Kord is acutally his uncle, Jarvis Kord, the man to whom Ted loaned the scarab. Ted was killed while trying to stop Jarvis' plan to destroy Hub City with a missile.
Batman and Blue Beetle break free from their restraints and stop Jarvis Kord and his robots. They leave the island as it blows up.
Thoughts
I really liked this episode. This felt like a Blue Beetly episode with a side of Batman. I like the voyage of discovery that Jaime take in this episode. I was fooled at first by Jarvis Kord but as soon as he talked about solving the world's problems I knew that something was up. I wasn't sure if he wasn't Ted Kord or if he was brainwashed Ted Kord but once he stated his super altruistic intentions I knew that something wasn't right.
I did a little research and wrote up some notes about the comic book versions of Blue Beetle and Jarvis Kord in a blog post titled Blue Beetle (DC).
