The Sopranos 2.12

The Knight in White Satin Armor

Richie tries to get some support for a move against Tony. He turns to Larry Parisi's son but is unsuccessful in convincing him. He tells Uncle Junior about it and that he is planning to move against Tony anyway. Uncle Junior takes this as a sign and tells Tony.

Tony breaks up with Irina. He isn't happy with her anymore. He is much more pragmatic than she is. He wants her to move on but she feels that he is all that she has. She doesn't take the break-up well. She tries to commit suicide. Tony tries talking to her but she is hurt and can't see things from his perspective.

Janice and Richie's marriage plans continue to move forward. Carmela tries to warn Janice about what she's in for being a mob wife.

Carmela goes to see Vic Musto after she finds one of Tony's shirts that smells of perfume. Vic apologizes for not coming for lunch. She thanks him.

Pussy starts to act like he's an FBI agent. He works harder to get leads for Lipari, his handler. Lipari warns him to knock it off and not do anything violent. Pussy tails Christopher and another guy who he knows are planning to steal a truckload of Pokemon cards. Pussy gets a little too ambitious, crashes his car, and almost kills a bicyclist.

Tony decides after thinking about it and talking to Silvio that Richie needs to go. Silvio agrees to take care of him. Janice beats Silvio to the punch, after Richie punches her. She pulls a gun on him and shoots him. She calls Tony for help. He runs off in the middle of the night to help her. He gets some help from Furio and Christopher disposing of the body.

Carmela suspected that Tony was going to see his mistress that night. She already called the house once before in this episode. Carmela calls the house where Janice and Richie live, while Tony is gone. When he answers the phone up she hangs up without saying a word. For once she knows that he was telling the truth.

Tony takes Janice to the bus terminal and puts her on a bus headed back to Seattle. He had a confrontation with their mother (who is oblivious to the murder of Richie) as they were leaving the house. The two siblings bond for a moment at the bus terminal.

Tony sends Silvio to see Irina with a lot of cash. He tries to talk some sense into her. She says she doesn't want the money but he leaves it with her anyway.

Tony gets home the next morning. He has a chat with Carmela. She seems to have cooled down a bit. She is surprised to learn that Janice left and it takes her a minute to read between the lines and understand what Tony is telling her about Richie.

Thoughts

I've seen this one before but I forgot about how it ended between Janice and Richie. I was sure they were going to fight but I didn't recall that she was the one who killed him. It was an intense moment. I was also very moved by the argument between Tony and his mother and the aftermath at the bus terminal.

Damn good episode. I can't think of a better one from this series off the top of my head. I have no recollection of what comes next in the season finale.
