UFO Robo Grendizer 1.11

The Evil Ones Are Intercepting the Burning Sun

The forces of Vega use a solar eclipse to try and defeat Duke Fleed and Grendizer once and for all. Their plan begins with them destroying all observatories on Earth except the one run by Professor Umon. Duke Fleed and Grendizer attack the Vegan mother ship which has entered the Earth's atmosphere. The mother ship retreats and lures Grendizer into the shadow created by the moon.

Duke Fleed quickly discovers that Grendizer is powerless in the shadow of the moon. Blaki sends Saucer Beast Bari Bari to keep Grendizer from drifting out of the shadow of the moon. The Vegans try to use a beam gun to destroy Gredizer. Kouji comes to the rescue in the TFO and pushes Grendizer out of the way of the beam gun using missiles with non-explosive warheads.

The Vegans recover and Bari Bari pulls Grendizer further into the shadow of the moon. Kouji uses the TFO to reflect sunlight on Grendizer. Grendizer powers up and is able to fight back. The eclipse ends and the two giant robots fall through Earth's outer atmosphere. They are locked together. Blaki tries destroying Bari Bari in the hope that Grendizer will be destroyed in the explosion. Duke Fleed figures out what they are up to and manages to disengage Grendizer from the sauce beast.

The saucer beast is destroyed. Duke Fleed wants to go after the Vegan mother ship but he was injured in the fight. He decides to lay off and return to Earth.

Thoughts

There is a lengthy explanation of how a solar eclipse works and how the Vegans will use it to their advantage against Grendizer. I'm not an astronomer or any kind of scientist for that matter but I've got a feeling that the basic explanation of the solar eclipse was accurate but that there are some nuances to it that are ignored for the sake of the plot.

I loved the scene where Blaki thinks that Grendizer is about to be destroyed. He imagines himself getting a medal for the accomplishment. It seemed very out of place for this show and therefore was a welcome diversion.

I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. It isn't great but if I accept the scientific explanations provided in the show then it isn't a bad episode, even if it is a bit standard.
