Fargo 3.08

Who Rules the Land of Denial?

A few more details are filled in about what caused the bus crash. Yuri stepped out into the road as shown in 3.07 but, with some help from Meemo and Golem (the fake cop who tried to kill Nikki in jail), he set up a makeshift device that helped the bus to crash.

Nikki and Mr. Wrench escape from the bus, shackled together, and run off into the woods. It isn't long before Yuri and the Golem come after them. Mr. Wrench is deaf which hampers their efforts to communicate. For the most part they just keep moving. Yuri and Golem stay on their tails. A couple of crossbow hunters interfere with the chase but don't slow things down. They are presumably killed but their deaths are not shown.

Meemo deals with a couple passersby while his coworkers trail the two escaped convicts. The passersby, a man and a woman, possibly a married couple, slowed down as they drove past the site of the crash.

Yuri and Golem eventually catch up to Nikki and Mr. Wrench. Nikki gets an arrow through her calf. Golem goes in for the kill and winds up dead. Mr. Wrench throws an axe at Yuri. It takes off his left ear, which causes quite a mess, but he continues to pursue them.

Nikki and Mr. Wrench run for a long time. The crash happened at night. The sun comes up. At least 24 hours pass before they arrive at a solitary bowling alley. They have broken the chain that binds them together before they get there. Paul Marrane (Ray Wise) is only other customer in the bowling alley. He has a kitten with him that he shows to Nikki. He's named it Ray. She holds it while Marrane talks to her. He tells her about a pogrom that happened in the Ukraine in the 18th century.

Marrane tells them to take the green Volkswagen beetle out front. The keys are in it. They take it and drive off. Yuri eventually finds the bowling alley. Marrane has a chat with him too but he seems to recognize Yuri and doesn't seem as kindly disposed towards him.

Sy goes to Emmit's place. He wants to talk to him. Meemo and Varga are there. They won't let him see Emmit. Varga talks him into having a cup of tea. The tea is poisoned. Sy collapses once he gets back to the office. He's rushed to the hospital. He remains comatose until at least mid-March.

Emmit goes to visit him in the hospital on March 15, 2011. The episode began on December 25, 2010. Emmit is approached by Deputy Burgle and Officer Lopez as he leaves the hospital. He tries to evade them only to discover that his car is gone and in it's place is Ray's old corvette.

A couple more incidents in the days that follow try Emmit's sanity. He walks into his office one day only to find that all the pictures in it have been replaced with images of the stamp. One day he wakes up and feels something above his upper lip. It is a mustache but he didn't grow it. It comes off when he pulls on it but Varga and Meemo have no explanation as to how it got there.

Varga offers Emmit a sedative. He takes it and falls asleep. Meemo carries him up to bed and leaves him there. Emmit's hand opens after Meemo leaves, revealing that he didn't take the pills. Emmit goes to the Meeker County Police Department. Gloria is there reviewing the papers that finalize her divorce. Emmit walks in just as she is about to leave. He says he wants to talk.

Thoughts

This felt like two episodes. I really liked the first one, Swango and Wrench on the run, but I wasn't as impressed by the second one, Emmit going nuts and then wanting to spill his guts. The first half was nothing but Swango and Wrench. The second half was nothing but Emmit. There were other characters in there but that's how it breaks down.

I was pleased to see Paul Marrane return. He was last seem in 3.03 when he ran into Gloria on the airplane and then at a bar in Los Angeles. It still isn't clear who he is. Is he a spirit of vengeance? Is he an assassin or a heavy of some sort? The story he told Nikki gave that scene a very mystical feel to it. The music might also have something to do with it. The same can be said of his conversation with Yuri, although that scene didn't last quite as long. I'm okay with the mystical feeling it gives the show but it still isn't clear what role he is playing.

I wasn't very pleased with the second half. It felt forced and all seemed to happen a little too quickly. It also isn't clear who is doing what. Maybe once I know, if I ever find out, who is up to the tricks that were played on Emmit, then it will all make sense. I had a hard time buying that Emmit was able to evade his babysitters. It isn't shown how he did it. Did he walk, drive, or catch a ride?

The only mention of Nikki and Yuri in the second half is that they are still out there and no one seems to know where they are. There is no mention of Mr. Wrench in the second half that I recall. There is a scene where Gloria goes to the scene of the accident but the U.S. Marshals who are in charge of the investigation just tell her that there were no women in the wreckage of the bus. She doesn't know about Wrench.

On the whole this was not a great episode but I loved the first half.
