Star Blazers 2199 1.13

The Wolf from Another Dimension

The Yamato is pursued by a transdimensional submarine of the Gamilan fleet, the UX-01 commanded by Captain Flaken. The Yamato hides in an asteroid field waiting for the enemy to expose itself. The enemy does the same until Captain Flaken grows tired of waiting. The UX-01 uncloaks and leaves the system but then sneaks back.

General Domel assumes formal command of the Milky Way Theater Operations. Domel's predecessor, Goer, who was last seen leaving his men behind while he fled in 1.10, is now his second in command.

Commander Okita collapses on the bridge. The the XO assumes command while Dr. Sado operates on the commander. Niimi has an idea for how to locate the enemy using transdimensional sonar. Kodai has a similar plan but he suggests using the Seagull to deploy buoys that can send out transdimensional signals to locate the enemy ship.

Sanada decides to go with Niimi's plan. Kodai remembers Commander Okita's advice about following orders from 1.12. He finds the crew from the Seagull and takes command of the small craft. Niimi's plan does not prove to be successful. It helps them to locate the enemy ship but it also gives away the Yamato's location.

The Seagull launches from the Yamato and uses the buoys to pinpoint the location of the enemy ship. The data is transmitted to the Yamato which knocks out the submarine's periscope. Before the submarine can surface the Yamato  leaves the system.

Thoughts

The Yamato sustains some damage but manages to limp out of the episode intact. This one reminded me a bit of the battle from 1.05 and 1.06. The Yamato meets an enemy that has the advantage and finds a way to turn that around. One of the twists that makes this one different is the sidelining of Commander Okita.

One nugget of information that gets dropped in this episode is that Sanada and Niimi knew Kodai's brother.

Good episode that is very straightforward but I still benefited from watching it a second time.
