GLOW 3.08

Keep Ridin’

The show shifts forward in time. It opens with a celebration of their 50th show. This is followed by a time lapse scene which features Ruth in the foreground removing her makeup while everyone else does other post show stuff around her. When the time lapse scene ends they have just finished their 200th show and it shows. No one wants to celebrate.

Ruth feels as if she is going nowhere. Russell gets a job for a couple months in Spain and she doesn’t know how to react. He doesn’t take that well. She helps Sheila rehearse lines for a play and realizes that Sheila is a better actress than her. She visits Tex’s ranch near Las Vegas with Debbie but doesn’t feel as if she knows what she’s doing. On the way back she stops and sees a psychic. She asks the psychic if she is wasting her life.

Cherry owes money to the Fan-Tan, $5,000 to be precise. Carmen finds out about it. The casino has given her a week to pay up or they will take her to court. She turns to mud wrestling. Carmen insists on going with her and being her opponent.

Bash and Rhonda talk to Jackie about their ideas for a new show. Jackie is being unrealistic about her other show. It is losing money. Bash wants to spice it up by introducing BMX racing to it. Jackie isn’t interested but he threatens to pull his financial support for the show if she doesn’t go with his idea.

Debbie starts talking to Bobby about producing his AIDS benefit. Melrose is still seeing her boyfriend but now she’s paying him.

The episode ends with two scenes. Rhonda tries to get Bash more excited in her. It has been two months since they last had sex. He doesn’t understand what the big deal is. He still loves her. That doesn’t seem to be enough for her. Ruth gets a call from Sam who is still gone from GLOW and working with Justine. She missed his call but he left a recorded message. He has a part for her in the movie they are working on.

Thoughts

This episode moves a few plot threads forward a bit. Aside from he part where Debbie wants to produce, which felt a bit like it came out of left field, I thought it all made sense and built on things that had come before. It good to see Bash and Rhonda’s relationship experience a little turbulence even if Bash doesn’t realize it. I really liked the scene where Ruth is reading lines with Sheila. The lines mirror her own situation a little too much. Sheila thinks Ruth is doing a great job when she is really just reflecting on her own life instead of getting into the part.

I thought it was a little silly that Cherry put so much into doing her hair before going out to mud wrestle. It also isn’t clear where that plot thread currently sits. Everyone seemed to like their performance but how much money did they make? What happens when Bash finds out about them stepping out to do mud wrestling on the aside? I think he might see it as a form of betrayal.

All in all a damn good episode although there are a number of characters who got little to no screen time.
