starring Horst Janson, John Carson, Caroline Munro, John Cater
directed by Brian Clemens
Captain Kronos (Janson), a former soldier, travels with Professor Hieronymus Grost (Cater). They hunt vampires and have fought them before. Kronos stops long enough to free Carla (Munro), a young woman locked up in the stocks. She joins them on their journey. They arrive in the village where Dr. Marcus (Carson), an old friend of Kronos, lives.
There is a vampire (of sorts) terrorizing the locals. It has killed a few villagers already. It seems to suck the life force out of them, leaving them aged husks of what they were. More villagers die before Kronos, Grost, and Marcus figure out where the vampire is holed up. Marcus gets bitten by the vampire. He tells Kronos that he must kill him before he turns into one of the undead.
It pains Cronos to do so but in the process of killing his old friend he learns what will kill this variety of vampire: a steel cross. Kronos and Grost get a steel cross from the village cemetery. Grost shapes it into a sword. They have learned by this point that the vampire must have some connection to the local nobility, the Durwards. Kronos, Grost, and Carla infiltrate the Durward estate, lure the vampire out of hiding, and kill it.
Thoughts
Not a great movie but this was fun to watch. It feels dated and doesn't exactly stand the test of time. I believe it was supposed to be the first in a series of movies featuring Captain Kronos but there were no sequels. The simplest way to categorize the movie would be to say that it's a action horror film.
