Atypical 3.05

Only Tweed

Evan stays over, accidentally. He and Casey oversleep in her room. Casey makes a scene so that Evan can sneak out. Before he leaves Casey let's him know that Doug is ready for him to come for a ride-a-long.

Sam is stressed out preparing for a Socratic assignment for his philosophy class. He's never had to do something like this before. The idea of the assignment is that the professor throws out a topis and then everyone has to argue about it. If someone doesn't contribute then they get an F for the assignement.

Paige goes before the disciplinary board at Bowdoin for throwing a hot burrito at another student. She pleads her case. They tell her that they will confer and let her know what they have decided.

Elsa runs into her mother on the street. Elsa is stunned to see her. Her mother does most of the talking before they part ways.

Sam stresses out and says nothing during the Socratic activity. He gets an F. The professor has him write a paper to try and make up for getting an F on the activity. She takes forever to grade the paper. He tells Paige who decides that they need to have a dinner party. She plans it all out and invites the guests.

Doug tells Casey that Evan never showed up for the ride-along. She tries contacting him but doesn't get a response. She gets invited to the dinner party and brings Izzy instead of Evan. He shows up later on and things get a bit contentious between Evan and Izzy.

Paige is not physically present at the dinner party since she is hundreds of miles away at Bowdoin. Sam has his iPad and propped up so that she can talk with everyone. The only other guests are Zahid and Gretchen. Zahid is quite honest about where he met Gretchen, next to a dumpster. She gets into an argument with Sam about the value of college.

The dinner party ends a bit abruptly. Paige finds out that the disciplinary board has decided to give her another chance. Sam gets a C on his paper. He finally breaks out of his shell and participates, at the last minute, in the next Socratic activity. Evan admits to Casey that he's dyslexic and freaked out when he found out that there would be tests to take in order to become an EMT. That's why he skipped the ride-along.

Thoughts

This episode. It had structure but the dinner party felt chaotic in a way that I really liked. There were lots of wonderful moments seeing Sam, Paige, Casey, Izzy, Evan, Zahid, and Gretchen interact. It would have been a completely different episode without the dinner party.

The title refers to the fact that Casey purposefully ignored Paige's instructions not to wear tweed to the party. Instead she went out and bought a tweed outfit just for the party.

Doug and Elsa were in this one but they were not the focus.

I think this show is on a tear. I've really liked the last few episodes. I hope that it can keep up what ever it is doing because I really like it.
