Queen Sono 1.03

The Devil's Toys

Shandu and some of his followers put on a show for the cameras of his new employer, Superior Solutions. They make it looks like they've been killed but it is all PR.

Queen travels to Nairobi with Miri, Dr. Isaacs, and Fred to a security conference. Ekaterina Gromova is there making a presentation. Queen, posing as a journalist asks Ekaterina some questions. Ekaterina gets suspicious and has her people look into Queen and one of her men follow her.

Fred spots Adam Bosingwa, the man who killed his parents and abducted his sister. He confronts Bosingwa and tries to kill him but Fred isn't a cold blooded killer and is unable to follow through on what he dreamed of doing.

Queen runs into a couple of familiar faces. She is surprised to see Nova, William's girlfriend at the conference. Nova spotted her first and is curious to know what Queen is up to. Queen is evasive and promises to meet Nova later for coffee.

Queen also runs into Shandu. They are both evasive about their reasons for being there. Miri and Dr. Isaacs give her a hard time for not getting more information from Shandu, all the more so because he is an ex-SOG operative who now works for Superior Solutions. Queen tells Shandu that she no longer works for SOG, that she's press but he later finds out that she's there under an assumed name. He also lies to Ekaterina and tells her that he doesn't know who Queen is.

Queen meets Nova for coffee. Nova is worried that Queen is a bad influence on William. Their conversation gets interrupted by Ekaterina who now knows that Queen was there the night that her brother was killed. Ekaterina is ready to beat Queen to death but Queen proves to be more resilient than Eaterina thought she would be. Queen finds Ekaterina to be very tough for a rich woman. Queen escapes but just barely.

Thoughts

There is a great moment when Queen, still posing as a journalist, confronts Julius Magoro, the former president of Tanzania. She asks him about her mother, Safiya Sono, without breaking her cover. He knew Safiya when they were both freedom fighters. There was something about the exchange between the two, the background music, the lighting that brought it all together and that really worked. The music in the scene where Fred confronts Bosingwa was similarly moving.

Why did Shandu lie to Ekaterina? He is still on good terms with Queen. That has to be why but what does that bode for the future? What difference does it make that he knows she lied to him?

I really liked this episode.
