Queen Sono 1.04

Rookie

The year is 2015 and Queen is the rookie. Shandu is still working for SOG. They are lovers. She is stuck doing desk work while he works in the field. She craves to be given a more exciting assignment.

Queen finally gets her break and is assigned to a protection detail. She and Vljoen are sent as part of the protection detail. They are guarding a meeting that Deputy President Malunga is having with some European businessmen. The men are trying to buy Malunga's influence. They want to build a nuclear power plant. Malunga isn't moving as fast as they hoped he would. They've already given him 50M Rand. The meeting ends with the businessmen walking out, angry.

Shandu and Ulrich, his partner, are also there as part of the detail. They plant listening devices in the meeting room so that Dr. Isaacs can hear everything that is said. They leave with Deputy President Malunga. The convoy that includes Malunga and his security detail is attacked after the meeting. Many are killed. The attackers are well trained and well armed. They have everyone pinned down.

Shandu and Ulrich finally get out of the car they are in and start to fight back. Queen and Viljoen hear the call for help over the radio and join the fight. Ulrich is killed by a sniper who is later killed by Queen. Viljoen is seriously injured but survives.

Queen doesn't know how to handle the situation. She was just feet away from Ulrich when he was killed. It brings back memories of her mother's murder. She turns to William for help with her emotional distress.

Queen, Shandu, Dr. Isaacs, and more are at the funeral for Ulrich. Shandu is very disturbed by what happened. He talks at the funeral about his brother and Ulrich, both of whom were MK soldiers and had fought the apartheid regime. Shandu's brother was killed in Angola. Shandu has had enough and after the funeral he walks away from SOG.

Dr. Isaacs turns to Queen after Shandu's departure. She isn't sure about continuing with SOG but Dr. Isaacs wants her to stay and offers her a bigger role in the organization's operations.

Thoughts

This episode provides more background information. It takes place entirely in 2015.

Fred and Miri are also in this episode but they don't get very much screen time.

I didn't like this one as much as the last one. It is good but it just didn't have any moments that got to me like some of the ones in previous episode.
