The Essence of a Penguin
Sam does a great job with drawing a picture of a penguin but the next assignment for art class throws him for a loop. He is supposed to draw the essence of his animal. He doesn't understand the assignment. He doesn't understand what he is being asked to do.
Paige tries to get used to having given up on her education. She picks up her plants which she left with Elsa. She levels with Sam and tells him about how things went bad for her at Bowdoin. She applies for lots of jobs but ends up working at a restaurant where she worked when she was in high school.
Casey and Izzy aren't exactly on speaking terms but Casey is still worried about her. Izzy doesn't show up for school the next day and Casey gets very concerned. She talks to Elsa about it but then Izzy texts her. There were problems at home, with her mother, that kept Izzy from coming to school.
Evan apologizes to Doug for not not showing up for the ride-along. He asks for another chance. Doug is reluctant but gives him a second chance. Things start out a little rocky but Evan shows some initiative which surprises Doug.
Zahid and Gretchen try to help Sam by taking him to the aquarium every day, so he can study the penguins. It helps until the day that Zahid and Gretchen get into an argument on the way to aquarium. Things blow up but then they get better and Sam gains some insight into his penguin. Sam comes up with a piece of art that really impresses his art teacher.
Thoughts
This was a good episode. I really liked it. I like all the little moments that are shared between Sam and Paige, Casey and Izzy, Evan and Doug, Elsa and Izzy. It wasn't a home run but as a part of the bigger story I really liked it.
