Dear White People 2.01

Chapter I

Two weeks have passed since the town hall meeting. There was a fire at Davis Hall after the meeting but no one has officially been blamed or taken responsibility for it. The displaced residents of Davis have been moved to Armstrong-Parker.

Sam wasn't arrested but she seems to be taking most of the blame for what happened that night. She is getting attacked left and right by racist commentators on social media. She pours most of her energy into fighting back, on social media. It becomes an all consuming drive for her. She goes days without showering.

Most of the long-time residents of AP don't care for the new situation. They are forced to double up in order to accommodate all the students who just moved in. Sam and Joelle are roommates. Coco seems to be one of the few long time residents who like the new arrangement. Lionel believes that the fire in Davis Hall was started by a right-wing supporter of the policy to integrate AP.

Troy was arrested for breaking one of the glass doors of Hancock Hall. He was sentenced to two weeks in jail. He returns to AP for the first time since the town hall. Everyone is happy to see him. He says that what he did that night was the best thing he ever did. He doesn't seem scarred by the experience.

Sam is still hung up on Gabe. He is dating someone new, a transfer student. He is the TA in Sam's documentary film class. His new girlfriend is also in the class. He is also making a doc about racism and got Reggie to sit for an interview.

Sam does her best to fight the social media fight but it overwhelms her. Her lowest moment comes when one of the trolls posts a picture of her with her parents from when she was a child.

Thoughts

This is definitely Sam's episode. I hope they do the same thing they did last season and retell part of the same story over the next few episodes from different perspectives. Most of the characters who got an episode (Troy, Lionel, Reggie, Coco, Gabe) last season only appeared in this one briefly.

Lena Waithe makes a brief appearance as a musical artist named P. Ninny. Her appearance is on a reality TV show that the residents of AP are watching.

I was a little surprised but also pleased to see that they didn't pick up this season right where the previous one ended.

I like this episode and look forward to seeing how the season continues to unfold from here.
