Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary (2019)

starring Sigourney Weaver, Tim Allen
direct by Jack Bennett

This is a sentimental look back at Galaxy Quest (1999) which in turn was a look back of sorts at Star Trek: The Original Series.

It has been a few years since I last watched Galaxy Quest. I think I saw it in the theater when it was first released.

I like how this documentary examines the making of the movie from various angles. I didn't know who the director was originally going to be and had no idea who ended up directing the movie. The topics covered include the origins of the story, the casting process, the designs of the creatures and sets, what it was like on the set.

Most of the actors from the movie (Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shaloub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni, Missi Pyle) appear in the documentary other than Alan Rickman who died a few years before the documentary was made. Clips from the movie, from the set, and stills from the making of the movie are included in the documentary. Everyone seems to have positive things to say about their experience making the movie even though they do admit that not everyone got along famously.

Some of the people in the documentary are cosplayers who love the movie but had nothing to do with the making of the movie. Brent Spiner and Wil Wheaton from Star Trek: The Next Generation are also in the documentary.

Thoughts

I'm not a huge fan of Galaxy Quest. It was fun to watch but not essential viewing. I feel the same about this movie although YMMV if you do love Galaxy Quest.
