Dear White People 2.02

Chapter II

Reggie is still dealing with trauma from the incident in 1.05. He doesn't know how to deal with it. He sometimes thinks he sees the security officer that pulled a gun on him but usually it's just his imagination. He goes on a bender with Troy and Kurt. They drink and get high together. He goes on a sexual bender without them after that. Troy's been getting a lot of sympathy sex since he got out of lock up and encourages Reggie to do it.

Reggie winds up at a bible study meeting by accident. Joelle is there. They go to open mic night together. It looks like they are getting close but while she's on stage he starts chatting with another woman. The woman leaves before Joelle returns to her seat but she saw it all. The damage is done.

Dean Fairbanks, Troy's father, tries talking to Reggie but he blows the older man off. Later, when he needs someone to talk to he goes to see the dean. He still hasn't told his father about what happened. He doesn't know how to tell him. He's afraid of how his father will react.

Reggie's new roommate is Clifton, who lead the other protest in 1.10. He hopes that Reggie will see him as a friend despite what happened before. He isn't very understanding. He has issues with some of Reggie's behavior.

Gabe asks Reggie a number of times to take part in his documentary. Reggie turns him down numerous times but finally decides to go ahead with it after his chat with Dean Fairbanks.

Thoughts

There was a lot going on in this episode, even if it was all about Reggie. It wasn't clear to me from the opening where it was going. I didn't see it even though I already knew that Reggie sat down with Gabe based on what happened in the previous episode.

Coco, Lionel, and Sam were also in this episode but didn't get a lot of screen time.

I'm glad to see that it looks like the show is sticking with the format set in the first season, where each episode focuses on a different character.

So far I like what I see.
