Un Village Français 2.04

Votre nom fait un peu juif
or Your Name Is a Little Jewish

4 March 1940

Schwartz and Von Ritter are socializing, sharing a drink at the sawmill at night when they get interrupted. Someone has painted the words "Schwartz. Dirty Jew" on the outside of the sawmill. Schwartz insists that he is not a Jew. Von Ritter tells him he will have to get the grafitti cleaned up immediately.

Lucienne sees Kurt again. Her radio is broken. He offers to fix it. She makes a date to see him at 9 PM. Mr. Bériot, the principal imposes on her later that day. He invites her over for dinner. She doesn't want to accept but doesn't know how to say no to him without raising suspicion.

De Kervern comes home to find that Judith has taken in a Jewish family from Belgium. They are headed south. She was afraid they would get arrested. He isn't happy about it but he tries to help them. He talks to Marie about it. She suggests that her husband could get them through the woods and across the line.

Jeanine Schwartz wants Raymond to do something about the accusation that he is Jewish. She suggests he could have a notice published in the newspaper saying that he isn't Jewish. He balks at that idea. He goes to see a doctor instead, one who will certify that he is not a Jew. The doctor inspects him and takes measurements of his body. Schwartz gets angry at the doctor and leaves before the inspection is finished.

Lucienne has dinner with Mr. Bériot. He keeps her longer than she wants to stay. He tries to give her a ring. She refuses to accept it and leaves. She gets back to her place and finds that Kurt has been there. Her radio works now and he left her a flower.

Jeanine Schwartz discovers that the rationing tickets for the family are gone. She accuses Sarah, the family's housekeeper, of taking them. Sarah insists that she didn't. Jeanine doesn't believe her and fires her. Sarah leaves right away. She gets picked up by the police because she is Jewish and is not registered.

Marie talks to Lorrain, her husband. He agrees to sneak the Jewish family across the line. Sarah joins the family after De Kervern helps her get away from the police station. Sarah and the family meet up with Lorrain, outside of town. He takes them through the woods but then he abandons them after he discovers evidence that Marie has been cheating on him with Raymond Schwartz.

Kurt comes to see Lucienne the next night. They listen to his radio and make out. They get interrupted by Jules Bériot who knocks on her door when he sees that her light is on. She tells him that she isn't feeling well and doesn't open the door for him. Kurt leaves soon after that.

Raymond goes into work the next day only to find a man from the Aryanization Department at the sawmill. The man is ready to take possession of the mill. Schwartz insists that he is not Jewish but the man doesn't care. Raymond knocks him down and the man pulls a gun on him. Von Ritter shows up and stands up for Schwartz. He chases the man off and then tells Schwartz about some work he has for his company.

The Jewish family and Sarah get picked up by the Germans. Lorrain does not return. She intuits that he must have found out about her infidelity. She tells DeKervern about it.

Thoughts

Daniel and Hortense Larcher, Jean Marchetti, Marcel Larcher, and the SD officer are not in this episode.

Is Raymond Jewish? I've got a feeling he might be and that it might be a fact that he's been hiding from everyone. Does his wife know? Is she in denial? I don't know. I thought at first that she hid the ration tickets and used the disappearance of the tickets as a pretext for firing Sarah. My heart sank when I saw that it was the two boys (Marceau and Gustave) that took the tickets. They have a chance to come clean but they don't.

What is going to happen to Lucienne? I know some things from reading the French Wikipedia page for the show. I wish I didn't. What is going to happen to her relationship with Kurt? It is highly forbidden. I feel as though it is doomed to fail.

Will Lorrain return? What will Marie do if he does? Will he try to kill Raymond Schwartz? He doesn't know about DeKervern. Will Sarah be seen again or is that it for her?

I didn't expect Von Ritter to come in and help Schwartz the way he did. He is proving to be much more honorable that I thought he would.

That was quite an episode. There were a number of moments that really got to me. The theme of the episode got to me. This show isn't always great but these last couple episode have really impressed me.
