Un Village Français 2.05

Danger de Mort
or Risk of Death

10 March 1941

De Kervern needs to get a look at the German's files on Essarts. He asks for Marie's help to forge a pass. She resists at first because it means lying to Raymond but in the end she agrees to do it.

Marcel Larcher needs to host a meeting for some higher level people in the Communist party. Gustave, his son, finds out about it and fears that his father is going to kill his rabbit and serve it to his guests. Gustave comes up with a plan to save Gustave's rabbit by using the ration tickets that he and Marceau took in the previous episode.

Müller interrogates the surviving members of the Jewish family. The father reveals that Lorrain is the first name of the man who was helping them but then deserted them. Müller also interrogates Sarah, from whom he learns that Lorrain was in fact Lorrain Germain.

Raymond goes to see Marie. She gets a look at his pass. She copies one of the signatures on the card and puts the card back. Raymond is unaware of what she did. Marie passes the paper with the signatures on it to Natacha who copies the signature on to a pass.

Gustave's plan doesn't go well. They get caught and taken to the police station. De Kervern figures out that the two boys are to blame for what happened to Sarah. Marceau doesn't feel any remorse and thinks that Sarah was arrested because she is Jewish. Marceau's mother comes to get him but Gustave's father doesn't have a telephone. Blanchon, one of the policemen offers to drive him home.

Gustave started hyperventilating on the drive home. He convinces Blanchon to take him to see Dr. Larcher, his uncle. Gustave tries to continue the act but his uncle sees through it. He dismisses the policeman and takes Gustave home. Daniel asks his nephew about what he's up to. Gustave tells him part of the truth but not the whole story.

De Kervern meets with Natacha after she has used the pass to get what information she can. She gives him what she found and tells him that she thinks she might have been spotted.

Gustave finds out when he gets home that his father didn't and had no intention of killing his rabbit. Marcel is proud of his son for fooling the police.

Raymond notices that there is a bloodstain on his pass. Marie cut her hand earlier. It makes him wonder. He is called in by Von Ritter. Müller is there when he arrives at Von Ritter's office. He inspects Raymond's pass and asks about the blookstain. Raymond makes up a story about cutting himself while shaving.

Raymond goes to Marie. He is very angry. He wants answers. He slaps her. Lorrain shows up carrying his hunting rifle. Marie tries to stop him and he knocks her down. He forces Schwartz to get on his knees and tells him to say his prayers.

Thoughts

Hortense is in this episode but only very briefly. Marchetti, Lucienne, Beriot, and Kurt are not in this episode.

I was not surprised that Raymond came up with a story on the fly. It seems like a skill that he would possess.

I'm curious to see where things are left at the end of the next episode. I know that a couple minor characters are going to get killed but other than that I have no clues.

This was another good one. I really like how the various subplots are layered together. There are some tense moments but there was nothing in this episode that really got me emotionally.
