The Box of Delights 1.05

Beware of Yesterday

Kay continues to eavesdrop on Abner's conversation with Joe. Joe seems to want to go easy on the Bishop and the choirboys they have kidnapped but Abner insists that finding the box is of paramount importance. Kay stays and listens to them talk until they leave to get some breakfast.

Kay goes to see the Inspector. He tries to convince the Inspector that the Bishop is locked up at the Theological Training College. That gets him nowhere because the Inspector can't believe that the Reverend Boddledale could have anything to do with the Bishop's disappearance.

Kay returns to Seekings Hall. He uses the Box of Delights to call on Herne the Hunter. Kay travels into the past with some help from Herne to see if he can find Arnold of Todi, who created the Box of Delights. He hopes that Arnold will return to the present and claim the Box. He hopes that this will solve all the problems.

Kay finds Arnold of Todi but the man has no interest in reclaiming the Box of Delights or in returning to the present. Kay wakes up back in his room as if it was all a bad dream. He returns to the Theological Training College to spy on Abner and Joe once again.

Joe demands that Abner return the kidnapped Bishop and the boys. Abner refuses. They go down to the basement to see the prisoners. Abner locks Joe in a cell and then inadvertently locks Kay in his chest of treasure. Kay tries to use the box to escape but he discovers that he has misplaced it.

Joe is liberated by Charles and Daisy who have learned that Abner is getting ready to stab them in the back. They also inadvertently free Kay from the treasure chest.

Thoughts

There's a fair amount of Abner and Joe in this episode.

Abner once again dismisses the notion that Cole Hawlings might have given Kay the Box of Delights. He trusts Daisy's assessment of Kay. If only he didn't trust her so implicitly.

When Kay goes into the past he is supposed to be lacking a shadow. He meets some soldiers who comment on the fact that he is missing a shadow. There are other scenes set in the past where Kay clearly has a shadow.

This is a decent installment in this story but it didn't exactly blow me away. The story is winding down. I've seen all this before but I don't remember it all. There are moments that feel familiar but I still can't recall how everything gets resolved.
