Better Call Saul 3.08

Slip

The episode opens with a flashback to before Jimmy moved to New Mexico. He breaks into the building where his parent's store used to be to retrieve a box of coins hidden in the drop ceiling. Marco is with him. They talk about the old days when the store was still around. Jimmy isn't as nostalgic about that time as Marco.

Present. Mike finds a body out in the desert after making a thorough search for it with the help of a metal detector. He calls the tribal police to report the find.

Chuck meets with a psychiatrist, one he has seen before. He tells her about his progress. He tells about his goals. She encourages him to not move too fast.

Jimmy is getting ready to film another ad for the music store when the owners change their minds. Jimmy slips and falls on a drumstick after they give him the bad news. Jimmy makes a deal with the owners of the music store. They make the commercials and he doesn't sue them.

Kim is meeting with Mesa Verde at a restaurant when Howard walks in with some clients. He stops by their table to say hello. Kim and Howard exchange words. She tries to set things right by writing him a check for the amount of her student loans that HHM covered. Howard tears up the check. They are not on the best of terms when they part ways.

Nacho prepares some pills. He plans to give them to Hector. He does things to make it easier to switch Hector's regular pills for the ones he has prepared. He is very nervous but he makes the switch without Hector or anyone else noticing what he is doing.

Chuck goes to the supermarket. It is a painful experience. Howard is waiting for him when he gets home. Howard wants to talk to him, about his malpractice insurance.

Kim finds Jimmy lying on the floor playing a guitar in his office. He explains that he slipped and injured his back. He gives her enough money to cover his end of expenses for six weeks. She doesn't feel good about taking the money. She opts to take on more work from a new client whom she was going to refer to another law firm.

Jimmy has to do more community service picking up trash under the highway. He helps one of the other guys who is working alongside him who wants to leave early. Jimmy threatens to bring a class action lawsuit against the guy supervising them. It works.

Mike meets with Gus. He needs help laundering some money, 200K in cash. Gus is reluctant to do it but he suggests that there may be a way. The episode ends with Mike and Gus shaking hands.

Thoughts

My guess is that the body Mike found was the body of the man who was killed after stopping to help the drug runners last season.

I didn't think the ad business was going to be a long time venture for Jimmy and this episode seems to confirm that. The scene where he fakes out the community service supervisor with the threat of a lawsuit seems like classic Saul.

I'm not sure where things are headed for Jimmy and Kim. They both seem to be trying to protect one another. The question is will they see the situation for what it is once their cards are face up on the table.

I'm not sure what Gus has in mind but I think it is clear that he has just agreed to help Mike launder his money. Part of the deal seems to be to get the money to Mike's family in case something happens to Mike.

The only part of this episode that has me uncertain is the part with Nacho. They are building it up like this is going to be it but I won't be satisfied if it goes smoothly for Nacho. There have to be bumps on that road or I will feel cheated. It isn't enough to just see him sweat.

This is a very good episode. I really like it. I'm itching to see where the various plot threads are left at the end of the season.
