Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)

starring Cary Grant, Priscilla Lane, Raymond Massey, Peter Lorre
directed by Frank Capra

118 minutes

Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant) has just gotten married and is getting to leave on his honeymoon when he learns that his aunts Abby and Martha have killed twelve men and buried their bodies in their basement. Mortimer tries to conceal the fact that he knows about the bodies but the plot quickly thickens. Mortimer keeps Elaine (Priscilla Lane), his new bride, at a distance while he deals with the goings on in his aunts' home.

A few unexpected guests stop by the house: police officers, Jonathan Brewster (Mortimer's homicidal brother), and an elderly man who almost becomes his aunts' next victim. Mortimer also has to deal with his brother Teddy who believes he is President Teddy Roosevelt. Mortimer more than has his hands full trying to keep everyone from learning too much and keep anyone else from murdering again.

Thoughts

This was originally a stage play. The movie was shot in 1941 but due to contractual agreement the movie was not released until 1944, after the play stopped running on Broadway. Boris Karloff, played the part of Jonathan Brewster in the stage play. That role was played by Raymond Massey in the movie.

John Alexander plays the part of Teddy. He also appeared in four episodes of the The Phil Silvers Show, one from the first season and three from the fourth season. He played generals in all of those episodes.

This was a lot of fun to watch. I laughed quite a few times. I think it is worth watching if you have never seen it before and like old movies. I'm not sure how well it has aged.
