Star Trek: The Next Generation 3.15

Yesterday's Enterprise

The Enterprise encounter a rift in space. One moment everything is normal, the next everything has changed. Tasha Yar, is alive once again and still serving on the Enterprise. The crew's uniforms have changed. Another starship appears before the Enterprise, NCC 1701-C, the Enterprise. Only Guinan recognizes that things aren't as they were moments before.

Captain Picard sends a team over to the Enterprise C. In the present the Federation is still at war with the Klingons. The away team finds survivors and that the Enterprise C is in bad shape. The away team stabilizes the Enterprise C.

Guinan talks to Captain Picard. She tells him that something, everything is wrong. She remembers how things were and tells him. He can't believe it.

Captain Picard talks to Captain Garrett of the Enterprise C. He explains that her ship must have passed through a temporal rift. She is confused but does her best to process the information.

Tasha has a similar conversation with Lieutenant Richard Castillo, the helmsman from the Enterprise C. She explains to him that the Enterprise C disappeared 22 years before while the Federation was conducting peace talks with the Klingons. Castillo explains that the Enterprise C was attempting to defend a Klingon colony on Narendra 3. They were attacked by multiple Romulan warbirds, but the history books have no records of that event.

Castillo and Tasha continue to work together to get the Enterprise C is better shape. There is a closeness that develops between them. Guinan meets Tasha who doesn't understand the look that Guinan gives her.

Captain Picard talks to his senior officers and explains that the Enterprise C must return through the temporal rift. There are objections but Captain Picard refuses to change his mind. He talks to Captain Garrett and tells her what he has learned from Guinan. Captain Garrett agrees that the Enterprise C must return through the rift. Moments later she is killed when a Klingon warship attacks.

The Klingon ship disappears. This gives Castillo time to talk to Captain Picard and continue repairs on the Enterprise C. Castillo explains that he plans to continue with Captain Garrett's plan even though he is the only remaining senior officer. Picard reluctantly accepts Castillo's course of action. Tashs transfers to the Enterprise C after talking first with Guinan and than with Picard.

Three Klingon warships attack while the Enterprise C is making its final preparations to enter the temporal rift. The Enterprise D defends the Enterprise C and sustains heavy damage in the process but once the Enterprise C passes through the rift everything reverts to the way it as before.

Thoughts

This is my second time watching this episode. I first watched it, according to my records  on Jul 5, 2011. I don't recall what exactly turned me on to this episode. I have only seen a handful of episodes from season 3. It is likely that I ran across somebody's post about it and that drove me to watch this episode. I also might have heard about it on a podcast, but it wouldn't have been a Star Trek podcast. It is more likely that it was a comic book podcast.

The moments where the senior officers of the Enterprise talk about the rules of time travel, as if they are experts, made me chuckle. There were similar moments in the original series. Sometimes they make me laugh and sometimes they just make me roll my eyes.

I like the changes to the designs in this episode. It must have been an expensive episode considering how much they changed things up just for this one episode.

This is still an excellent episode. The music is really good. There was more than one moment that got me a bit emotional. If only most episodes of Star Trek were this good.

Notes

Tricia O'Neil played the part of Captain Garrett. She also played a Klingon in an episode from season 6. She also appeared in an episode of Deep Space 9 playing a different alien.

Christopher McDonald played the part of Lieutenant Castillo. This is his only appearance in a Star Trek TV show or movie. He also auditioned for the part of Commander Riker when The Next Generation  was being cast. He was the voice of Jor-El in four episodes of Superman: The Animated Series and in one episode of JLU. He was the voice of Superman in two episodes of Batman Beyond.

Denise Crosby played the part of Tasha Yar for the first time since the first season of the show. It is her last appearance as Tasha but she returned to play Sela (Tasha's daughter) in four more episodes of The Next Generation including 5.08 (Unification - Part Two).
