Lady Snowblood (1973)

Lady Snowblood (1973)

starring Meiko Kaji
directed by Toshiya Fujita

97 minutes

Yuki is raised and trained to get revenge on the people who killed her father and raped her mother. One of them is already dead, killed by Yuki's mother who was later sent to prison where she died giving birth to Yuki.

Yuki, once she is an adult, seeks out the remaining two men and one woman.

Each of the three people she seeks presents their own challenge.

Thoughts

Lady Snowblood is set in the late 19th century but there are a number of scenes where the music is from the mid to late 20th century. There is also a scene where what looks like a rubber mask is peeled off someone's face.

The fights in this movie were very bloody.

I wish that there was more to the characters in this movie. They all seemed fairly one note, especially Yuki. It is isn't until the very end that she expresses anything other than a desire for revenge. There were spots that could have been played better but the line readings were a bit wooden. The manner in which the movie was shot and edited together also didn't help in this regard.

There is the bones of a better film here but unfortunately this isn't it. It isn't hard to see how this movie influenced Kill Bill. I'm not the biggest fan of Kill Bill but that's on the whole a better movie than this one.
