Moonlighting 1.05

Next Stop Murder

Ms. DiPesto wins a ride on J.B. Ballard's Murder Mystery Train. Maddie and David take Agnes to the train station. They escort Agnes on to the train but then they get stuck on the train and are unable to disembark before it takes off.

The planned murder mystery doesn't go exactly as planned. Ballard turns up dead. Agnes and Roy, one of Ballard's employees, get interested in one another. David and Maddie try to solve the mystery. More than one of the other passengers is suspected of killing J.B. until David solves the mystery.

There is a struggle when the killer tries to escape. David and Maddie chase the killer on to the roof of the train, while it is still moving.

Thoughts

Agnes DiPesto gets more screen time in this episode than she probably had in the four previous episodes combined. She was a definite plus. I hope that there are more Agnes episodes in the future although as I understand it there will more Agnes than there should have been in last couple season of the show.

This episode does not play bait and switch with the killer, who turns out to be the most interesting looking person on the train.

Vincent Schiavelli played Roy. I've seen him in a number of other things including One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and Batman Returns (1992). This is the first of two appearances he made on the show. He played a different character in his second appearance which occurred during the second season of the show. He and Allyce Beasley (Agnes DiPesto) were married in 1985.

There were only a few other people on the train but Roy is the only one that really stood out in my mind. It didn't feel like the guest cast were very well handled in my estimation.

This was a fun episode. The story moved a little too fast for me to keep up with it. The best parts were the conversations between Maddie and David.
