The Phil Silvers Show 3.24

Bilko the Art Lover

Bilko gets a two week furlough. He goes to New York to see Carlyle Thompson III, who used to be in his platoon. Carlyle comes from a rich family.

Things don't go exactly as planned. Things start to come apart when Carlyle gets into a fight with his father over his future. Carlyle wants to be a sculptor but his father wants him to join the family shipping business. The fight between Carlyle and his father comes to a head just as Bilko arrives.

Instead of staying in a luxurious home on Park Avenue, Bilko winds up having to leave with Carlyle. Bilko scrambles to salvage the situation. He does his best to sell some of Carlyle's artwork.

Thoughts

Alan Alda played Carlyle Thompson III. It took mw a moment to recognize him. I knew that he was in an episode of this show but I didn't know which one. This is his first screen credit according to IMDb. I know him best from M*A*S*H but I've also seen him in movies and other TV shows.

Henry Lascoe played the landlord of the apartment building that Carlyle and Bilko move to after Carlyle's gives them the boot. This is the sixth of seven episodes in which he has appeared. He has played a different character in every one of those episodes.

This was an okay episode. It didn't blow me away. Alan Alda doesn't get a chance to show the comedic skills that he would later develop. He's the straight man to Bilko's frenetic huckster.
