Maron 4.13

Bookend

Marc finally gets to talk to Shay. She doesn't want to have anything to do with him at first. Eventually she comes around. Marc starts to podcast again.

I'm not sure about this ending to the series. I don't love it. I don't love the series as a whole. It had its moments. As a devoted listener of the WTF podcast I stuck with it. I love the podcast. Not every episode is a winner but most episodes engage me on one level or another.

The first 3 seasons of the TV show seem to be a fictionalized version of Marc's life. This season went a bit off the rails. Sometimes that is for the best. I'm not sure if I would say that's the case this time around.

Maron 4.12

The Bookstore

Marc tries to make a life for himself in Chilton. He goes to an AA meeting, stalks his son, meets his son, tries to get a job at a used bookstore.

Not so into this one am I. There were parts that felt a bit forced. Not awful just not very special in my book.

Maron 4.11

The Geographic

Marc hits the road (in the RV his father gave him) and heads north to see his biological child. Along the way he stops and sees a number of people he knows.

That description (especially the second sentence) makes the episode seem more epic than it actually is. It's a decent episode, a bit weird in parts.

Maron 4.10

Amends

Marc takes his sponsor's advice and starts going around making amends to people that he feels he did wrong. Not everyone wants to listen. Most if not all of the people he apologizes to appeared on earlier seasons of Maron. About halfway through the episode Marc's father shows up. For the most part he isn't very helpful.

There were some good laughs in this one.

Maron 4.09

Shrink and Kink

Marc goes to a therapist to discuss his problems. The therapist is much younger than Marc. Dave reveals some more tidbits about his wife. Later, Marc gets to see first hand what Dave and Nina are like behind closed doors. Marc runs into his first ex-wife, Steph. She is his therapist's boss.

Not the funniest episode but still a good one, in my book.

Maron 4.08

Dave's TV Show

Marc turns to his buddy Dave Anthony for help. Dave's fortunes have risen just as Marc's have fallen. Dave now has a beautiful wife and lives in a beautiful home. H elets Marc stay with him and his wife and gives him a job as a writer on the TV show that he is in the process of developing. Things are starting to look up but Dave is acting weird and most of his success seems to come from pretending to be the sort of person Marc was before he lost everything.

Very funny. Dave Anthony was the star of this one.

Maron 4.07

Philippe

Marc hangs out with an old friend of his, Bobby Mendez, against Shirley's advice. They go to a recovery meeting, Bobby gets beat up, they go to a cock fight and win some money, they hang out with prostitutes. It is all a little too much for Marc or at least more than he wants at this point in his life.

This was one of the funniest episodes I have seen of this show. Just when I thought it couldn't get any weirder it did, especially towards the end.

Maron 4.06

Sobriety Bush

Marc has to find a place to live after returning to Los Angeles. He attends an AA meeting and gets a sponsor who helps him find a place to live. He starts taking steps towards getting back to work; he goes on stage at the Ice House, and bombs.

This was not an extremely upbeat episode but there were a few good laughs.

Shirley, the woman who owns the place where Marc stays, is played by Sally Struthers. Gerry, Marc's sponsor, is played by Don Stark who was part of the cast of That 70s Show, which I watched when it first aired.

Maron 4.05

Marc in Florida

Marc graduates from the rehab clinic. He had nowhere else to go so he accepts an invitation from his mother to come stay with her in Miami. Marc clashes with Ralph, his mother's boyfriend. By the end of the episode he is packing and on his way back to LA.

On the whole a pretty good episode. I chuckled more than a few times. It wasn't what I was expecting. I was starting to get used to the rehab clinic arc as the new normal. Now it is over. I wonder if Trey, Adam, or Chris will surface again during this season.

Maron 4.04

The 13th Step

I was wrong. The rehab arc is not over. Marc is still in rehab.

Marc is hit on by Natalie, a fresh face at the rehab center. She is age appropriate and drank heavily before she arrived at the rehab center. She needs something and hopes to get it from Marc. Even though he is attracted to her he can't get himself to do the wrong thing. He turns down sex with her twice.

This episode probably should have been called Natalie because the plot revolved heavily around her. I'm still confused about what the 13th step is exactly. Loved the humorous moments with Trey and Adam.

Maron 4.03

The Field Trip

Marc is still in rehab. The rehab group goes on a field trip to his old neighborhood. He meets the guy who bought his house after the bank repossessed it. Mark acts like a dick and maybe grows up a little bit. It looks like this might be the end of the rehab arc but if so then what comes next? Does Marc rebuild his life? Can he?

Good episode. I really liked how Marc interacted with the other members of the rehab group and how they interacted with one another.

Maron 4.02

Marc's Roommate

Marc wakes up in the rehab center. He tries leaving but ends up returning. Chris, his counselor, is a fan of his and wannabe podcaster who secretly tapes his conversations with patients. Trey, his roommate, is the spoiled son of an unnamed, big shot movie producer. Marc gets into arguments with both of them and by the end of the episode seems to have everyone's number.

As usual not the funniest show but it has its moments. The whole inmate running the asylum bit felt a bit cliched. I'm going to continue watching even if I don't always say the nicest things about this show which I think says something about how I feel about it even if I am unable to clearly express that feeling.

Maron 4.01

Step 1

A lot has changed since the end of season 3. Marc now lives in a storage unit. He is no longer podcasting and is no longer sober. He is taking OxyContin which he is getting from a home healthcare worker he sleeps with. He tries to get his act together by getting Louis CK to work on a project with him but instead he gets checked in to a rehab clinic.

There are some good laughs here. As always this isn't the funniest show around but I like the tone of it. Sometimes it works sometimes doesn't. I would say this episode works for me.
