Man in the Box
starring Charles Boyer
written by John Bagni, Gwen Bagni
directed by Robert Florey
A man (Charles Boyer) sits and watches a play. He imagines himself playing three different parts in the play: Benedict (the ruthless dictator), Topaz (the leader of the rebellion), and Davidow (Benedict's secretary). Elena, Benedict's wife, begs him to change his ways but he refuses, despite knowing that he may be assassinated that very night. Benedict is left alone, as the play ends, facing imminent death and with the knowledge that Elena has left him to be with Topaz.
There's a twist ending but it felt a bit tacked on. I was intrigued enough by the story up to the point where the play ends. I'm not sure what it all means or if it means anything at all.
Notes
This is the fourth of 30 episodes of this show that starred Charles Boyer.
Harry Bartell played the part of Davidow, in the early going. Toward the end of the episode Davidow stopped looking like Harry Bartell and instead looked like Charles Boyer. This is the first of three episodes of this show in which Harry Bartell appeared. He also appeared in an episode of The Twilight Zone (1959), 1.15 I Shot an Arrow into the Air, and had an uncredited part in Monkey Business (1952).
Patricia Morison played the part of Elena. This is the first of two episodes of this show in which she appeared.
