Le Pont
or The Bridge

26 Aug 1944

The Americans arrive during the night, but just a few of them. They bring explosives and want to blow up the bridge for reasons that later become apparent. The explosives are set with the help of Marie and the other Resistance fighters. Something goes wrong and the explosives don't detonate. Everyone gets pinned down by a sniper while they are trying to figure out what wrong with the explosives.

Janvier survives the attack on his home, but just barely. They take him to the police station and call for Dr. Larcher. When Daniel gets there and examines Janvier he can tell it doesn't look good. It looks to him like one of the bullets hit Janvier's spine. Janvier needs to be taken to a hospital but under the current circumstances that's impossible. He gives Janvier a shot of morphine and a priest comes to give Janvier last rites.

Antoine and Suzanne take refuge in her husband's home. The militia come looking for the people responsible for shooting Janvier. Alban searches the home. He sees someone hiding in the closet but doesn't search it. Suzanne and Antoine aren't sure why.

Hortense and Heinrich drive toward the Swiss border. They stop and have a bite to eat. An American jeep with three soldiers in it stops and asks them for directions. Heinrich is spooked by the encounter and fears that the road they are taking must be controlled by the American Army.

Marie finds out that the Germans are searching for Antoine and Marie. She goes with the Americans to talk to their commanding officer to try and convince him to take Villeneuve. She learns why the Americans want the bridge destroyed, they are trying to trap a German tank unit.

Antoine and Suzanne are getting ready to meet up with one of their contacts in Resistance, not long after they left her husband's apartment, when they run into Marchetti and Loriot who have their guns drawn.

Thoughts

Gustave is not in this episode although he does get mentioned. Another name that comes up is De Kervern. Servier tells Marchetti that his old boss is with the Resistance now. Still no sign of Jeanine, Lucienne, or Jules.

I don't think that Antoine and Suzanne are about to get killed but at least for the moment it doesn't look good for them. The police are in an interesting position at the moment. They aren't under the direct command of the militia but they stand to lose quite a bit, probably their freedom if not their lives, when the Germans leave town and the Americans take over. I'm not sure what Heinrich's fate will be but I don't think it looks good for him. One of the preview images in the opening credits shows Hortense with American MPs.

This was a pretty good episode. There's a lot of tension. Things seem very much up in the air. Even though the end of the German occupation is in sight there is still plenty of potential for people to get killed.
