starring Eric Bana, Genevieve O'Reilly, Keir O'Donnell
directed by
117 minutes
Aaron Falk (Eric Bana) an Australian Federal Policeman, returns to home town to attend the funeral of Luke, a friend from 20 years ago. It isn't just Luke who is dead. His wife and 8 year old son are buried on the same day. The belief is that Luke killed them and then himself although the police have yet to find a motive.
Returning to town dredges up a lot of old memories, some good and some bad. Aaron used to hang with Luke, Ellie, and Gretchen. Their little group was broken up after Ellie was found dead, drowned in a spot where they used to hang out. Ellie's father accused Aaron of murdering Ellie. Aaron's father took it seriously enough that he sent Aaron away.
Aaron reconnects with Gretchen (Genevieve O'Reilly), who still lives in town. He knocks heads with Ellie's brother who seems more than ready for some a fistfight.
The story bounces back and forth between past and present as Aaron works with the local policeman Sgt Gega Roca (Keir O'Donnell) to try and figure out what happened.
Thoughts
I've seen Eric Bana in at least a half dozen other films prior to this one. The only one of those movies I've seen in the last 10 years is also the only one in which he was not the lead, Finding Nemo (2003).
I've seen Keir O'Donnell in a couple other things (Season 2 of Fargo, Season 3 of United States of Tara) but I didn't recognize him from either of those shows. Matthew Nable played the part of Grant, Ellie's brother. I've seen him before in Mr. Inbetween.
I was very impressed by this film. All the performances were quite good. I like how the story moves back and forth between past and present. The ending might wrap things up a little too neatly but it was a very satisfying watch.
