The Twilight Zone (1959) 1.29

Nightmare of a Child

starring Janice Rule, Shepperd Strudwick, Terry Burnham
written by Rod Serling
directed by Alvin Ganzer

Schoolteacher Helen Foley (Janice Rule) finds a little girl (Terry Burnham) sitting on the steps outside her apartment. She invites the little girl in for some hot cocoa. The girl, whose nickname is Markie, knows things about Helen. Markie runs off, out the back door to the apartment when someone else comes the door, a man named Peter Selden (Shepperd Strudwick).

Mr. Selden knows Helen but she doesn't remember him. He knew her mother. He killed her mother. He's there to finish the job he started years ago when he murdered Helen's mother.

Thoughts

I like this episode. It is a little freaky. I was not sure if it was all a dream or delusion of Helen's mind, until the end.

Notes

This is the only episode of this show in which Janice Rule, Shepperd Strudwick, and Terry Burnham appeared. I've seen Janice Rule once before in The Swimmer (1968). I've seen Shepperd Strudwick before in All the King's Men (1959).

This is the third of four episodes of this show that Alvin Ganzer directed. The second episode he directed was 1.16 The Hitch-Hiker.
