Alfred Hitchcock Presents 1.31

The Gentleman from America

starring Biff McGuire, Ralph Clanton, John Irving
written by Francis Cockrell
directed by Robert Stevens

Sir Stephen Hurstwood (Ralph Clanton) makes a bet with Howard Latimer (Biff McGuire) that he won't be able to spend one full night in Hurstwood Manor. Latimer, the gentleman from America, takes the bet believing that there's no way he  won't win. Sir Stephen and his friend Derek (John Irving), have the homefield advantage and believe that Howard's confidence is misplaced.

Thoughts

I liked this episode in the early going but the ending explained things a little too much and lacked much of a twist. It was all just a little too straight forward and lacking in nuance.

Notes

This is the first of four episodes of this show in which Biff McGuire appeared. He also appeared in an episode of The Phil Silvers Show, 2.30 Bilko the Marriage Broker. This is the first of seven episodes of this show in which Ralph Clanton appeared. This is the only episode of this show in which John Irving appeared.

The teleplay for this episode was written by Francis Cockerell, based on a story written by Michael Arlen. This is the only story of Arlen's that was turned into an episode of this show. This is the eighth episode whose teleplay was written by Cockrell. The seventh one for which he wrote the teleplay was 1.26 Whodunnit.

This is the 12th of 44 episodes that Robert Stevens directed. The 11th episode he directed was 1.30 Never Again.
