The Collaborator
Vedek Bareil visits Deep Space Nine in the days leading up to the election of the new Kai. Information surfaces that he might have been the one responsible for helping the Cardassians to locate and destroy a camp of Bajoran resistance fighters during the war. Kira, who loves Bareil, is tasked with finding out the truth.
Vedek Winn also visits the station. She seems to accept that Bareil will be elected Kai but she also does things to irk Kira.
Kira gets some help from Chief O'Brien, Odo, and Quark in accessing old records to see what she can learn about what happened on board the space station years before. The trail of information points to the fact that the records she seeks were destroyed by Vedek Bareil. She believes at first that this means that he was the one who helped the Cardassians. She passes what she had learned on to Vedek Winn.
Vedek Bareil chooses to step aside and not be a candidate in the election. Winn is elected Kai in his place. Kira does some more digging and discovers that Vedek Bareil's movements in the week leading up to the massacre make it impossible for him to have been the traitor. He reveals to her that it was Kai Opaka who passed the information along to the Cardassians. He did what he did to protect her legacy.
Thoughts
Doctor Bashir and Jake were not in this episode. This episode belonged to Kira.
The title of this episode implies that there is just one collaborator but there is more than just the one.
This episode was one of those bigger picture episodes. There will be ramifications of the events in this episode although I'm not sure when they will occur.
I enjoyed this episode very much. I liked the intrigue and the way it all played out. It was very intricate without being overly complicated.
Notes
Kai Opaka made a return appearance in this episode during a vision that Vedek Bareil experienced. This is the third of four episodes in which she appeared and the first since she was last seen in the flesh in 1.12 Battle Lines.
This is the fourth of 14 episodes in which Vedek Winn appeared. Her third appearance was in 2.03 The Siege.
This is the fifth of seven episodes in which Vedek Bareil appeared. His fourth appearance was in 2.16 Shadowplay.
Bert Remsen played the part of Kubus Oak a Bajoran who worked for the occupation government during the war. This is the only episode of this show in which he appeared. He appeared in one episode of The Outer Limits (1963), 1.02 The Hundred Days of the Dragon. He also appeared in episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, and Kraft Suspense Theatre. I've seen him in a few movies but not recently.
The teleplay for this episode was written by Garry Holland, Ira Steven Behr, and Robert Hewitt Wolfe. This is the first of two episodes of this show that Holland helped to write. This is the eighth of 53 episodes that Behr had a hand in writing. This is one of 84 episodes that Wolfe had a hand in writing.
This episode was directed by Cliff Bole. This is the third of seven episodes of this show that he directed. The second episode he directed was 2.05 Cardassians.
