Black Angel (1946)

Black Angel (1946)

starring Dan Duryea, June Vincent, Peter Lorre
written by Roy Chanslor
directed by Roy William Neill

81 minutes

Catherine Bennett (June Vincent) turns to composer and pianist Martin Blair (Dan Duryea) for help after her husband is tried and convicted of murdering his ex-wife. Their investigation leads them to nightclub owner Marko (Peter Lorre). They put together an act and and get jobs singing and playing the piano in Marko's nightclub in the hopes of figuring out how Marko killed Martin's wife. Things don't go exactly as planned.

Thoughts

I saw this movie as part of the 2026 Noir City DC film festival at the AFI Silver Theater. I had not seen it before.

This wasn't bad. I enjoyed it for the most part. It has an interesting twist ending but it lacked the energy that filled the rest of the movie.

Notes

I have seen Dan Duryea, June Vincent, and Peter Lorre in other movies. Other actors in this movie that I have seen in other movies include Broderick Crawford, Wallace Ford, and Freddie Steele.

Roy Chanslor also wrote Public Wedding (1937). The screenplay this movie is based on a novel of the same name written by Cornell Woolrich. This is at least the fifth movie I have seen, fourth in recent years, that was based on one of Woolrich's stories.
