Ching Chong Chang
A new prisoner arrives at Litchfield. She asks for kosher food. She insists on it. The kitchen don't have a choice. They have to give it to her and can't ask why. Cindy sees this and decides to get in on the new menu.
Chapman and the others assigned to the lingerie sewing team start to get used to it. There's a lot of talk about the women in the catalogs. Chapman meets a prisoner she hasn't met before. Cindy, Watson, and Flaca get into a discussion about the inclusion of women of color in the catalog.
Chang gets the backstory spotlight. Her mother tried to marry her off but the guy was repulsed by her looks. She wound up working for her brother. Part of his business was dealing in illegal substances that are supposed to help men get it up or keep it up. She saved a guy's life when a deal goes bad. He repaid her by helping her get even with the guy who was interested in her until he met her.
Morello meets a few men with whom she has started corresponding. She changes her look for each one of them. She seems to be putting more effort into her looks once again although she has yet to revert to the look she had before Nickels was hauled away. She claims to be doing it to get money for her commissary account. It almost blows up in her face when she mixes one guy up with another. She comes prepared for a conversation about birds but he turns out to be interested in martial arts.
The prison is hiring new guards. The current ones are still working but they have had their hours and their benefits cut. Caputo isn't behind the plan to hire new guards but he gets the brunt of the guards' (O'Neill, Bell, Ford, etc.) anger when they see an ad in the local paper advertising for new guards.
Bennett doesn't make an appearance, once again. Dayanara shows up in this episode but doesn't get much screen time and isn't exactly pining for him. Nickels has yet to show up again.
Mendoza tries to find a ride for her son.
Chang is among the prisoners in CO Rogers acting class. She is one of two prisoners who have written a scene for someone else to perform. Murphy is the other writer. Both plays have some autobiographical parts from the writers' lives.
Red pushes the issue again and gets Healy to get her back in the kitchen. Mendoza is still in charge of the kitchen but Red is back.
Thoughts
It is good to see some new faces added to this show but it has me wondering if some of the ones that have faded away will ever return.
It was good to see Chang get the backstory spotlight. There has been little to nothing revealed about her up to this point. My only quibble is that the actor who played the young Chang seemed too tall.
I like the tension between Caputo and the guards but I'm not sure where it's going. It is starting to feel like the writers don't really have a plan.
Lolly Whitehill, the new prisoner mentioned above, appeared previously in 2.01. Chapman ran into her when she was sent to Chicago.
Some of the inmates see a news segment about Judy King, who sounds like a mashup of Martha Stewart and Paula Dean. King has just been sentenced to prison. Maybe she will end up in Litchfield.
I'm enjoying the show but it feels like it is wandering all over the place. As I approach the halfway point in the season I'm up for watching more but where's it all going? Have Nickels and Bennett been shelved so that other characters and new storylines can get more attention?
