Gauna 487 is still pursuing Sidonia. They try firing a round from the heavy mass cannon at the gauna but it shrugs it off. Gauna 487 continues to pursue and is closing fast. Captain Kobayashi orders evasive maneuvers. Many people are killed but precious time has been bought.
Most of the gardes are sent out to protect Sidonia. A squad of four (Tanikaze, Hoshijiro, Kunato, En Honoka) are sent to retrieve one of the two Kabizashi that the elite squad took with them. The other one is lost beyond recovery. Tanikaze locates it but before he can get to it he is ordered back to Sidonia by Kunato.
Kunato retrieves the Kabizashi but then Gauna 487 turns on the retrieval team. It open up and fires a Heigus particle canon at the squad. All their gardes are out of commission and don't respond to anything the pilots do with the controls.
Hoshijiro's garde malfunctions and fires its rockets. She is unable to do anything to stop it as she hurtles further and further away from Sidonia. She ejects as she detects that her garde is about to explode. She survives but is left drifting in space.
Tanikaze gets his garde back online. Gauna 487 is still headed for them. Kunato and Honoka are helpless in their malfunctioning gardes. Tanikaze is ordered to grab the other two gardes and head back. He disregards the order and grabs the Kabizashi. He heads straight for Gauna 487.
The gauna fires its Heigus Particle Canon at him but he dodges the shot and fires back. He scores a hit which exposes the gauna's ena. Nagate delivers the coup de grace and destroys the gauna by piercing the ena with the kabizashi.
Tanikaze is ordered back to Sidonia but instead he goes after Hoshijiro. He doesn't have enough fuel to reach her and make it back to Sidonia. The order to abort and return to Sidonia is repeated numerous times but Tanikaze keeps going and passes the point of no return in his quest to rescue Hoshijiro.
Throughout the episode there are a lot of glimpses of Captain Kobayashi and her crew in the command center and of other pilots. Samari and Tsuruuchi, who also had a scene in 1.03, have a brief moment while the gardes are being deployed to protect Sidonia from Gauna 487.
Thoughts
Nagate defies orders not once, but twice, and proves his worth. Hoshijiro goes from warrior to damsel in distress. Kunato tries to claim the glory by being the one to retrieve the kakizashi but Gauna 487 ruins that for him. This is a very action packed episode and probably my favorite to date.
