Jaime Reyes wakes up in the clutches of the Reach, the aliens who have partnered with the Light. He was dreaming just before he woke up. He dreamed that he just found the scarab for the first time. The scarab is still able to talk to him, once he wakes up, but it is unable to activate any weapons systems. It does translate for him so that he can understand what the Reach scientists are saying.
Nightwing leads a mission to recover the missing and captured members of the team. He sends Robin, Batgirl, and Bumblebee to infiltrate a group of teenagers who have been captured by the Light and will soon be delivered to the Reach. Batgirl and Robin are in civilian attire; Bumblebee is hidden in the pocket of Robin's jacket. Nightwing, Miss Martian, and Wonder Girl watch from within the camouflaged bio-ship as the teens are loaded aboard the Light's ship and then taken to the Reach's scientists.
Miss Martian infiltrate's the Reach's underwater vessel and with Robin, Batgirl, and Bumblebee helps to free the captured youngsters including Impulse and Beast Boy. Impulse takes off as soon as he is free and goes looking for Blue Beetle. Miss Martian gets the others to head to the bio-ship, which has docked with the Reach's much larger ship. She runs into Aqualad along the way. She starts to use her mental powers on him and in the process discovers about the ruse.
Impulse reveals to Blue Beetle, before they head to the bio-ship, that the reason he came from the past was to try and prevent him from turning evil. They get to the bio-ship only to discover that a very powerful member of the Reach, who looks very much like a larger version of Blue Beetle is taking down all the heroes.
Jaime is still wiped and finally gives the scarab full control to fight the Black Beetle. The others get into the bio-ship while the two beetles fight. They are forced to leave without him once the room where the fight is ongoing starts to flood. Blue Beetle and Black Beetle fight until Black Beetle has to abandon the fight and Blue Beetle gets blown outside of the ship. Lagaan rescues him and the heroes head for home.
Nightwing alerts the Justice League about what happened. He gets a rude surprise when he discovers that the Reach have outed themselves at the United Nations. The heroes think they know what they are up against but the final shot shows an armada of Reach ships in the Mariana Trench.
Thoughts
Miss Martian is stunned after she discovers that Aqualad is not a traitor and that Artemis is still alive. She barely says anything in the episode after that point. What must be going through her mind? How does this change her perspective? Does she feel betrayed?
I thought I didn't know who the Reach were but that name is familiar. They were in Batman: Brave and the Bold 2.03.
How did Superboy infiltrate the Light's followers? Maybe Artemis helped with that and it just wasn't shown. I think that must be the case.
Great followup to the previous episode. I really enjoyed this one. It is a nice way to end the first half of the season.
