Young Justice 2.09

Darkest

Kaldur'ahm gets into an argument with his captive, Lagoon Boy, and before sending him off to the Light and their as yet unidentified alien partners, he injects him with a tranquilizer.

Blue Beetle and Impulse hang out comparing their powers until they are attacked by Kaldur'ahm and a squad of bad guys (the Terror Twins, Icicle Jr., and Tigress). The villains get the jump on them but the heroes escape with the device that Kaldur'ahm used to locate them. They take it back to Mount Justice which gives the villains the edge they need to bypass the security systems.

The villains strike. They incapacitate the heroes who are present (Nightwing, Superboy, Beast Boy, Blue Beetle, Impulse) with inhibitor collars. They take Beast Boy, Blue Beetle, and Impulse with them. The tech in Beetle's scarab fights back but is overwhelmed by the combination of Kaldur's magic and Tigress' sedatives.

The villains blow up Mount Justice with a bomb (similar to the one that blew up Malina Island in 1.03) that they left behind. Mal Duncan returns from a visit to the lab where Karen Beecher is working in time to help fish Nightwing, Superboy, and Wolf out of the water. They were saved from the explosion by Sphere.

Wally shows up and gives Nightwing a hard time for putting Artemis (aka Tigress) in harm's way. He isn't assuaged by the reveal that Kaldur injected Lagaan with a tracking device when he sedated him. The fact that Kaldur passed Nightwing a thumb drive with information about the Light similarly does not do anything to calm Wally's mood. Wally questions whether Kaldur is really on their side or not.

Kaldur returns to his father's hide out with the captives. He is rewarded by finally getting to meet in a teleconference with the leaders of the Light: Vandal Savage, Queen Bee, Lex Luthor, Klarion, Ra's Al Ghul.

Thoughts

I wasn't fooled by Tigress. I knew she had to be Artemis before she even said a word. I'm also not convinced that Kaldur is really on the side of the Light. I do wonder how long he can keep up the pretense that he is a bad guy. He has been taking quite a few risks.

Icicle Jr. is really creepy. The way he hits on Tuppence Terror made my skin crawl.

Episodes like this really need to be watched more than once and slowly. There are little details that only get mentioned briefly but that are key. It is easy to get distracted by the action and there's a fair amount of it in this episode.

This episode doesn't really resolve anything but it continues to build up the larger story. I like it but I'm not crazy about it.
