Orange Is the New Black 3.07

Tongue-Tied

Caputo tries to institute a training program for the new correctional officers. Pearson shoots the idea down. He thinks all they need is a manual and on the job training. Caputo reluctantly agrees to Pearson's plan. The results aren't good. Bayley, a new CO, freaks out when he walks up on a couple of inmates arguing over a game of Uno. He pepper sprays the inmates on purpose and then himself and another CO by accident. Pearson reluctantly agrees afterwards to extend the training to 6 hours, considerably less than the 40 hours Caputo wanted.

Romano gets the backstory spotlight. Her star has been rising among the women of the Litchfield. They come to her for magical answers to their problems. She doesn't do anything but touch them but it seems to satisfy most of them. When she was much younger Norma followed Guru Mack, a cult leader, who used a similar technique. Her inability to speak is revealed to be due to a stutter. She fell hard for the cult leader. She married him and followed him around even when he married other women. She stuck with him even after everyone else had deserted him. She still believes in him but this only seems to anger him. His anger at her pushes her to push him off a cliff.

Suzanne gets angry at herself when CO Rogers refuses to let her stage her sci-fi erotica. Taystee talks her down and encourages her to keep writing. Washington gets a hold of the latest chapters that Suzanne has written and gives her a lot of encouragement.

Chapman comes up with a scheme to make money. She suggests to Vause that they could sneak panties made from extra material out of the workshop. They could sell them, after wearing them, to men who get off on smelling women's underwear. Chapman tries to get Cal, her brother, to help by setting up a web site where they could sell the panties. She also turns Carlin on to the idea.

Red starts working in the kitchen again much to Mendoza's dismay. She starts off small. She learns about Romano's magic but shrugs it off. Mendoza erupts after having a bad day. Her son came to visit her but he isn't behaving. He's a bad influence on Burset's son, which causes some strife between the two inmates. Mendoza has to cut her visit with her son short after Ramos cuts the tip of one of her fingers off. She goes off on Caputo and quits as head of the kitchen. Caputo gives the job back to Red only to later reveal that they are changing how the food is prepared.

Chapman reconnects with Whitehill who doesn't remember her at first.

Daya talk to her mother about what to do with the baby.

Thoughts

Caputo demonstrates a take down move to be used on Prisoners in extreme situations. He demonstrates it on a new CO who is much bigger than him. I was ready for him to screw it up but instead he does it too well and leaves the CO in a lot of pain.

Suzanne's erotica is hilarious.

I can see something coming together now. It seems like the focus this season is on money. There is the private company running the prison. It is cutting costs and trying to turn the prison into a money maker. More than one prisoner is trying to make money. Morello is suckering lonely guys into funding her commissary account. Chapman has a scheme to make money off of used underwear.

I'm past the halfway point and I am still liking this season.
