Orange Is the New Black 3.03

Empathy Is a Boner Killer

Nichols took the heroin. She has it stashed somewhere but they don't show where. She tells Luschek that the heroin was stolen. She moves the drugs to a lighting unit in the laundry room. The drugs fall out of the lighting unit and are found by Angie and Leann. They get high. Nichols sees them and confesses to Luschek what actually happened.

Nichols gets the backstory spotlight. She was out of control before she went to prison. Her mother didn't know how to deal with her. She gave Nicky money in the hopes that it would keep her from stealing it. Nicky never learned.

Daya pines for Bennett who hasn't been seen for a few days.

Healy needs help talking to his Russian wife. Their marriage is on the rocks. His wife speaks some English but Healy asks Red to help interpret for them. She ends up doing more than just interpret. She also gives Katya, Healy's wife, a piece of her mind. She tells her to stop expecting Healy to live up to her idealistic view of what a husband should be.

Correctional Officer Ford approaches Caputo about a rumor that Litchfield will be closing soon. Caputo is very cagey and doesn't give him a straight answer. Ford pesters Caputo later on, this time with some help from O'Neill and Bell. Caputo does his best to ignore them. He calls Figueroa and asks her for some help. She refuses to help until he threatens to give her husband's boyfriend a call.

Chapman and Vause experience some changes in their relationship. They are both pulled into an acting class run by Correctional Officer Rogers, the new counselor. They improvise a scene which is supposed to take place between a grocery store manager and a customer but it quickly becomes about the two of them.  Vause finds that she doesn't feel quite as angry towards Chapman after the class.

Luschek gets what dope is left from Angie and Leann. They get pissed and start telling all the guards they run into about Luschek and the heroin. Caputo eventually hears about it. He has a couple of the COs search Luschek's desk. They find  a tiny bag of heroin. He had already moved the drugs he took from Leann and Angie. Luschek blames Nichols. Caputo accepts it and Nichols is sent down the road to a much higher security facility.

Thoughts

Bennett is not in this episode. No one seems to know where he is. I presume he will resurface but where? Will he contact Delia about taking care of the baby?

The shoe seems to be on the other foot now in terms of Red and Healy's relationship. Last episode he was projecting his problems on to her relationship with her husband. She now seems to be projecting her problems on to his relationship with Katya.

Nichol's role in this episode felt forced at times. There didn't seem to be much in the way of character moments for her. I understand where the story was supposed to go but it felt much more plot driven without as much thought given to showing how and why she did what she did.

I think I would prefer it if the backstory spotlights were used on characters that haven't received them before.

I want to like this episode more than I do. I'm going to keep watching but I'm not in love with season just yet. I like it but it needs more than it has shown me so far in order to hook me.
