Nurse Mayflower makes cookies for Doctor Harvard. She entices him to try one. It is of course poisoned. A minute after he eats it he falls on the floor and starts convulsing. She takes that moment to look at the anonymous letter he received, before she calls for help.
Josto and Calamita find Dumini's body. They know that Milligan is nowhere to be found. Josto orders Calamita to go after Milligan and Satchell. He assumes that Milligan must be taking him back to Loy so he orders Calamita to hit Cannon's home.
Leon tries talking Loy into killing Gaetano and going to war with the Faddas. Loy doesn't care for the advice. He beats Leon until one of his other men convinces him to lay off him.
Wickware catches up to Weff who is staking out Cannon headquarters. Wickware knows that Weff is crooked. He offers to help him but Weff gets angry and tells him to leave.
Calamita goes to the Cannon homestead. Cannon's wife answers the door. He tries to force his way in but she pulls a shotgun on him. He sees the light and leaves.
Cannon's men start moving contraband into the Smutney home. Ethelrida is there and sees it happening. She does nothing to object. She runs into Lemuel Cannon. She runs off after staring at him for a few seconds. A coffin is nearby. It opens slightly when he has his back turned. It closes again before he sees that it was open. He walks over to it but doesn't attempt to open it.
Calamita checks the room where Milligan and Satchell lived. He finds an ad for Uncle Jack's Feed and Seed in the pages of a bible.
Josto goes to Cannon headquarters with a bunch of his men. They stay outside while Josto and the consigliere go in. No one seems to notice but Marshall Wickware is in a car down the block, watching.
Josto and Loy talk. Josto tells them that Satchell is dead. He offers Gaetano's life in return for Satchell's. Loy wants to see the body. Josto claims he doesn't have it. Calamita is the one who killed him and Milligan. He says he doesn't know where the bodies are. Loy tells Josto to get out.
Loy goes home. He contemplates killing Josto's youngest brother, the hostage. He thinks about Satchell. He thinks about telling his wife about what happened to Satchell. The next day he is driving through town and sees a sign for the Diner's Club Credit Card.
Weff packs all his stuff, all his personal belongings and goes out to his car. Two of Loy's men approach him before he can go anywhere. Loy wants to see him. Weff doesn't have a choice in the matter. Loy sends Zelmaire and Swanee on their way, gives them train tickets to Phildelphia before talking to Weff. He explains his situation to Weff and tells him that he won't sink to the Italians' level.
Loy explains his situation to Gaetano and then he lets him go.
Thoughts
Thurman and Dibrel Smutney don't make an appearance in this episode. Satchell and Milligan only show up in flashbacks.
If Nurse Mayflower did her job properly then Doctor Harvard won't recover. The only other possibility I can conceive is that she is planning to disappear very soon. She does seem supremely confident, like Loren Malvo in Season 1.
Josto is playing a dangerous game. He seems to trust Calamita at first but then he turns on him. Josto acts like he knows what he is doing but I don't think he truly sees the potential downside.
I didn't think Loy was going to kill the young boy but I didn't foresee exactly how that scene would play out. It was a tense moment. Loy is also playing a dangerous game. I like to think of it as a calculated risk. I think that he is right. Josto is trying to goad him into doing something.
I thought this was a very good episode. There are a few too many pieces on the board for all of them to get the spotlight in every episode. Weff and Wickware did reunite briefly as I thought they would, probably not for the last time. Weff got plenty of time in this episode but Wickware did not. Ethelrida only got one moment and it couldn't have lasted more than a minute or two. It didn't amount to much. Hopefully the show will return to her relationship with Nurse Mayflower soon.
