Mr. Inbetween 2.08

See You in Your Dreams

Ray talks to Brittany's class about his job. He tells them that he's in security. The kids ask some probing questions but when they get too close to the truth Ray starts joking around.

Ray has another meeting with Kate, the writer. She asks him about how he feels about killing people and how it differs from killing people when he was in the army. He doesn't see it as being any different or at least that's what he tells her. He claims he doesn't feel anything.

Freddy tells Ray that Dirk got into a fight with one of the other bouncers. Freddy hired him on Ray's recommendation. The other bouncer had to go to the emergency room. Freddy is pissed and tells Ray that he's going to fire Dirk. Ray goes around to Dirk's apartment and delivers the bad news.

Ray and Gary catch up to Vinnie. They grab him and throw him in a van. He struggles at first but then he calms down. They drive him out of town to a spot where they can see the city. He talks to Ray on the drive out about what it was like killing someone for the first time. He says he still sees the face of the guy in his dreams. See you in your dreams, he says to Ray, just before Ray shoots him in the head.

Ray gets a call from Freddy. The club was robbed. He was there but he didn't get a good look at the thief. The CCTV was working but the thief was careful and didn't show his face. Ray sees enough to know that it was Dirk. Freddy wants him dead. Ray isn't too keen on that. He and Dirk go back a ways.

Ray goes to see Dirk. He finds him at his apartment. They go for a drive out to the coast. Ray tells Dirk that he needs to leave town and never come back. He offers to help get him setup. Dirk can't or won't do it. They are standing near a cliff. Dirk gets up walks over. He turns to face Ray and tells him he can't do it. He leans back and falls off the cliff, killing himself.

Thoughts

That was dark, probably the darkest episode yet. Ray killed one old friend and watched another one commit suicide. He didn't show any emotion but I think it has to have got to him. There's no other reason they would be showing all this. I'm not sure where the show is going in the last three episodes of the season but I will be disappointed if it suddenly veers in a different direction and doesn't pick up this thread again.

It was worse in a way that Ray didn't react. Watching Dirk lean backward and fall over the edge was truly chilling. I was pretty sure that Ray would go through with the hit on Vinnie but I wasn't sure exactly how it would go down. I thought at one point that Ray was going to kill Dirk too. I wasn't expecting Dirk to do what he did but I did start to wonder when he walked over to the edge. The combination of the two events in one episode was traumatic. Hopefully the next episode will be at least a little lighter but it does feel as if the show has turned a corner with this episode.
