Fargo 4.05

The Birthplace of Civilization

The police start cracking down on the Cannon gang's operations, legal and illegal. They shut down one of their nightclubs and then hit the Cannon gang's headquarters. Cannon just finished making a deal with a gang from up north. They handed over most of the guns they took from the Fadda gang in return for a pledge to help out when they need it. The police, led by Detective Weff, don't arrive until after the guns are gone. Weff takes the money that Thurman Smutney gave to Loy.

Ethelrida writes a letter to Dr. Harvard warning him about Nurse Mayflower. She frames it as if it is coming from one of Nurse Mayflower's coworkers. She mentions that there have been a lot of excessive deaths on Nurse Mayflower's watch.

Rabbi Milligan warns Josto about Gaetano and what he suspects his next move will be. He tells Satchel to be ready to move once the shooting begins.

Etherida goes to see her aunt. Her father told her where Zelmaire was. They get into a conversation about the difference between criminals and outlaws. Zelmaire and Swanee sees themselves as outlaws. Zelmaire thinks that Ethelrida is an outlaw but her niece isn't so sure about that.

Josto goes to the jail to pass along a message to Loy Cannon's men who are locked up. He tells them that they are doomed. Rabbi Milligan is with Josto. He stays behind to say something to Cannon's men. He asks them what Cannon is up to but they aren't willing to tell him anything.

Marshall Wickware stops by Detective Weff's apartment. He saw Weff leave the Cannon headquarteres with a big bag. He suggests that he could have helped out. Weff isn't looking for help. Wickware asks and Weff tells him about his girlfriend who died while he was serving in France during World War II. He also tells him about how he was responsible for clearing mines during the war. It also came up during the raid on Cannon's headquarters.

Gaetano and Calamita go to a quiet bar to have a chat. The owner and his son get on Gaetano's nerves so he kills them.

Loy Cannon goes to see Thurman and Dibrell Smutney. It is Ethelrida's 17th birthday. They are putting up decorations and Dibrell has baked a cake. Cannon tells them that they are going to sign over their business to him. They work for him now. He also wants to know where Zelmaire and Swanee are.

Wickware interrogates Ethelrida in the principal's office. He wants to know where Zelmaire and Swanee are. She acts smart and doesn't give him what he wants. He threatens to get her expelled if she doesn't spill.

Wickware heads to the hotel where the two fugitives are holed up. He gets there a little too late. Loy Cannon got there before him. Loy wants to hire Zelmaire and Swanee to work for him. They are reluctant but go with him. Wickware gets up to the room in time to look out the window and see them begin pushed into a car.

Doctor Senator walks in to Spuds All Nite. He finds Gaetano and Calamita waiting for him. Gaetano is eating a Sundae in a booth. Calamita is at a table and invites him to have a seat. They talk for a few minutes in menacing tones. Doctor Senator leaves but they come after him, kill him and his driver. Loy and his gang find the bodies. Loy doesn't want to leave them there but they can hear police sirens.

Thoughts

The shit starts to hit the fan.

The episode opens. musically speaking, with the band in the nightclub playing Moanin' and ends with the Fargo theme music. Gaetano seems to be hearing opera music in his head during the scene where he kills the bar owner and his son.

There are a number of scenes in this episode that end on cliffhangers of sorts. Maybe this is more common than I thought with this show but it really stood out in this episode. Most notable to me were the back to back scenes where first Dibrell and Thurman are interrogated by Loy and then Ethelrida is interrogated by Marshall Wickware. In both cases Loy and the Wickware were looking for the same information. Both scenes end without an answer to the question but it is clear from what follows that both Ethelrida and her father told Wickware and Loy where to find Zelmaire and Swanee.

Nurse Mayflower was only in this episode very briefly.

Ethelrida uses the classic line from Miller's Crossing (What's the rumpus?) when she greets the principal's secretary, just before she gets interrogated by Marshall Wickware.

Things are going south for Loy but they are also headed in that direction for Josto. They could both use some help. Josto's visit to the jail seems to indicate that he is hoping to get some help from Cannon's gang in dealing with his brother. I don't think there is any possibility for reconciliation between the brothers. Gaetano wants to take over. Loy turns to Zelmaire and Swanee for help.

I still find Gaetano to be a bit ridiculous, in a menacing sort of way.

This is really starting to get good.
