Life After Flash (2017)

directed by Lisa Downs
94 min

The title implies that this documentary is about Sam Jones life after he starred in Flash Gordon (1980). There is some of that in it but this also about the making of the 1980 film. The movie delves into Sam Jones past but it also covers things like special effects and the music. Many of the people who worked on the movie are interviewed for it but not everyone. Notable exceptions are Max von Sydow (Ming the Merciless), Timothy Dalton (Prince Barin), and Ornella Muti (Princess Aura).

There are a number of people interviewed who had nothing to do with making the movie. Some are well known like artist Alex Ross and director Robert Rodriguez. Others are just big fans of the movie including a couple guys who have big collections of props from the movie.

The last half hour of the movie is just about Sam, how he straightened his life out with the help of others, including his wife.

Thoughts

The 30 to 60 minutes of this documentary include lots of clips from the 1980 movie.

I was more interested and drawn in by the stuff about the making of Flash Gordon than I was by the parts about Sam Jones' life.
