The Sandmine Murders (2012)

directed by Steve Broster
32 minutes

This is a documentary about the making of The Robots of Death. They cover quite a bit of ground in just 32 minutes. It opens with director Michael Briant and producer Peter Hinchcliffe talking about their memories of the origin of the story. Tom Baker wasn't a big fan of the story when he first read it.

There are five members of the cast interviewed for this documentary: Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, plus three members of the cast who played crew members on the sandminer (Pamela Salem, David Collings, Brian Croucher). Elizabeth Waller, who worked on costumes for the show, talks about the look and design of the costumes worn by the robots and the crew.

The outside of the sandminer was influenced by a trip the crew made to an actual mine. The inside of the sandminer was influenced in part by Michael Briant's visit to a merchant naval vessel on which his cousin worked. That visit led him to decide that the quarters of the crew on the sandminer didn't need to look austere. They decided to go for an art deco look.

This was informative and a lot of fun to watch.
