Justice League 2.09.A

Secret Society - Part 1

Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter arrive at Prime Tech in time to foil a robbery attempt by the Shade and some of his goons. The Shade escapes and is picked up by Giganta, a tall red head in a large vehicle. She takes him to a cave where he meets her associates: Sinestro, Parasite, Killer Frost, and their leader, Gorilla Grodd.

Green Lantern calls a meeting of the Justice League. He feels that they have gotten sloppy and need to practice as a team. Everyone reluctantly agrees except Batman. They head out into the desert to practice their skills and their teamwork. Batman sticks around for a little while but eventually he gets tired of it all and leaves.

Gorilla Grodd's new team, the Secret Society, practices a little teamwork themselves before heading out for their first mission. They invade the private island of Morgan Edge. They handle his security forces without too much trouble. They find what they were looking for with some help from the reluctant Mr. Edge, canisters of what looks like mud. The dough-like substance comes to life, once freed from the canisters, it is Clayface.

The Justice League, minus Batman continues to practice together although they don't seem to be getting along very well. Batman investigates the attack on the island of Morgan Edge. He catches up to Clayface who is in the midst of robbing a warehouse. The rest of the Secret Society is there. The rest of the Justice League shows up. The two teams fight. They seem evenly matched at first but the Secret Society gets the upper hand and escapes.

The Justice Leaguers start yelling at one another, blaming one another for how badly things went. The episode ends with the Justice League splitting up as the seven members each take off in different directions.

Thoughts

Morgan Edge was the owner of Galaxy Broadcasting which bought the Daily Planet. He first appeared in Superman 244 (Nov 1971) and most of his subsequent appearances were in Superman, Action Comics, and World's Finest.

I don't have much in the way of clear memories of this episode from past viewings. I didn't recall the whole working on teamwork thing. That part kind of bored me, quickly. It really felt like that part dragged on a little longer than necessary. It also feels a little too afterschool special to me. I did enjoy seeing how the villains worked together.

I hope that I like the next part better than this one.
