When They See Us (2019)

When They See Us - Part 1

Five teenage boys (Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise), all 14-16 years old, are brought in for hanging out in Central Park late at night. A white woman is found in the park that same night. She had been raped and was in critical condition. The NYPD suspects the teens raped the woman.

The boys try to tell the police that they didn't know anything about the woman or the rape. The police insist and keep questioning the boys, separately, and pushing them to admit to what they did and talk about what they remember about what the other boys did. Eventually they give in to the demands of the police and make false confessions, thinking that it will make it easier for them.

There are holes in the case. The D.A. has doubts but the police get one of the boys to confess in such a way that his story goes along with the known facts.

This installment ends with the 5 teens being hauled away after the D.A. has decided to press charges against them.

Thoughts

This is a 4-part series. This is a true story. I know of this case but I don't know all the details.

This was an intense and engaging watch. It wasn't always 100% clear what was going on. I think that makes sense considering all the conflicting accounts. It also goes well with the way the four teens were pushed around by the police and the way the police changed the case to match up with the known facts.

Raymond Santana was played by Marquiz Rodriguez. He was also in one episode of Luke Cage and a few episodes of Iron Fist. I didn't recall seeing him in either series.

Korey Wise was playd by Jharrel Jerome. I did not remember him but he was also in Moonlight, where he played a fairly pivotal role in the teenage segment of the movie.

Raymond's father was played by John Leguizamo plays the . Antron's father was played by Michael K. Williams. I know him best from The Wire but he has been in a few other things I have seen including an episode of The Sopranos (3.13 Army of One).
