Doctor Who (1963) 1.01.01

An Unearthly Child

There are some minor differences between this episode and the pilot but nothing major. Everything happens in the same order with some things changed slightly.
  • Susan does not mess around with an ink blot test
  • Susan's clothes in the second half of the episode are different from the pilot
  • Ian does not try to wrestle the Doctor away from the controls of the TARDIS before it takes off

Thoughts

There is a commentary track for this episode with Verity Lambert (producer), Carole Ann Ford (Susan Foreman), William Russell (Ian Chesterton), and Garry Russell.

They talk about
  • Carole and Ian's earliest memories of Doctor Who
  • How Verity chose Carole Ann Ford, William Russell, and Jacqueline Hill to be the Doctor's first three companions
  • Their memories of Sidney Newman
  • Their memories of William Hartnell
  • The differences between the pilot and the broadcast versions of the episode
This is a slow start to the series by today's standards. It doesn't draw me in but I'm sure I would have looked at it differently if I had seen it when it debuted.
