starring Aaron Paul, Jesse Plemons
written and directed by Vince Gilligan
123 minutes
Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) evades the police and outlaws in his quest to escape from Albuquerque, NM in the wake of the events of the Breaking Bad series finale. Jesse flashes back numerous times to a weekend while he was still a prisoner of the neo-nazi thugs that held him prisoner for months. He helped Todd during that weekend with a personal matter and learned something that later proved to be useful once he escaped from the compound.
There are a number of characters, some whom were dead by the end of Breaking Bad, who show up in flashbacks. There are also quite a few series regulars or recurring characters (including Saul Goodman) who are not in this movie.
It has been almost nine-and-a-half years since I finished watching Breaking Bad. If there were inconsistencies between this movie and the TV show then I didn't notice them. It has been about five years since this movie was released. I honestly didn't know what I was missing or what the movie would be like. I knew that it starred Aaron Paul but that was about it.
I waited to watch this movie until after I had watched all the episodes of Better Call Saul that aired before El Camino was released. That was unnecessary as there is nothing in this movie that would have spoiled anything in the first four seasons of Better Call Saul.
It was worth the wait and worth the watch. It is the epilogue that the series was missing. The story, the performances, and everything about this movie lived up to my memories of the TV show. It is a little more introspective than some episodes of the show. It feels a bit like fan service at times but it is so well done that the moments didn't feel unearned.
