Orange Is the New Black 7.01

Beginning of the End

Piper struggles to adjust to life on the outtside. She is living with her brother Cal and his wife. They have a new born baby. Piper's boss isn't very understanding, nor is her parole officer. Her father is unwilling to help her in any meaningful way. She goes to see Alex, who has problems of her own.

Taystee is back in prison, for life. She was convicted of murdering one of the guards. Suzanne wants to talk to Taystee but Doggett convinces her not to do it. Suzanne does talk to Cindy who still feels guilty about not testafyng on Cindy's behalf.

Alex gets into an argument with Murphy. She tricks Murphy into getting into a fight with Taystee. Murphy and Taystee get sent to the SHU. Red and Mendoza are still in the SHU. They are in adjoining cells. Mendoza tries to engage Red in conversation but Red doesn't want to speak.

Aleida is still with Hopper but she is also seeing Caesar on the side. She has her kids living with them. Hopper is still sneaking drugs into Litchfield. He wants to stop but Aleida isn't ready to stop the drug pipeline.

Alex ends up getting pushed into selling drugs for one of the guards. Her first plan is to sell the drugs to Daddy. That seems like a good idea but then Daddy overdoses and dies. Alex is stuck and decides to sell the drugs herself.

Piper goes to see Alex. Piper finds out on the way there that she has lost her job waiting tables. Piper and Alex both lie about how their lives are going. They both put on a happy face and act as if everything is going well.

Thoughts

There is a bit of a flashback spotlight. It is on Piper. Most of the flashbacks are to her life before prison but there is also one flashback to time spent with Alex at Litchfield.

There are a number of characters who did not appear in this episode: Bursett, Caputo, Linda, Figueroa, Ruiz, Flores, Berlin. Bursett was granted early release at the same time as Chapman. I have no idea if she or any of the others will be seen again.

This is a decent start to the final season of the show. I'm curious to see where it all goes from here. I have no idea if the show has a happy ending for Piper and Alex or any of the other inmates for that matter. This episode wasn't a real uplifting one which makes me think that it will get better but I'm not sure how much better.
