Interior Chinatown 1.01

Generic Asian Man

Willis Wu waits tables at Golden Palace, a Chinese restaurant. His life seems kind of boring until one night he sees a woman get abducted. Lana Lee, a police detective, comes to the restaurant the next day. Willis talks to her. She needs his help with a case she is working. Willis is stunned that she's asking him for help but he agrees to do what he can.

Members of a couple of rival Chinatown gangs show up at Golden Palace later that night. A fight breaks out. The restaurant is wrecked. Willis holds his own in the fight, at first, but ends up getting beaten up pretty badly. The next day he meets with Detective Lee. He gives her a tea cup, which is a piece of evidence that she asked him to collect. She explains that she wants him to work with her to solve a case. The case is related to the disappearance of his older brother.

The episode ends with Willis spotting the woman who was abducted. She looks to be in good health even though police reports claimed that she was found dead.

Thoughts

This sounded interesting. I thought I would give it a try. I figured that if I wasn't enjoying it then I would turn it off after 10 minutes. I liked it. I kept watching. I really liked it.

One of the weird quirks of this show is that it seems to be a show about a show. The show within the show is a police show called Black and White. The main characters on that show are Detectives Green and Turner. Detective Lee is a secondary or recurring character on the show. Willis is a background character on Black and White.

There were some good laughs in this episode. It is a good mix of serious and not so serious. I also like the way the story is constructed. They don't hit you over the head with the fact that it is a show within a show. It is just there. I don't see how I can stop here. There are 10 episodes. I think that I have to keep watching this show.
