Doctor Who (1963) 2.02.05

The Waking Ally
(aka The Dalek Invasion of Earth - Part Five)

Ian and Larry escape from the Slyther by jumping into large mining bucket. The Slyther tries following them but Ian hits in with a rock until it falls deep into the mine shaft. The bucket starts moving and descends into the mine.

The Doctor, Susan, Tyler, and David descend into the sewers. They are followed by a couple Robomen. The robomen attack them. David kills one of them. The other one is knocked unconscious.

Susan and Jenny find a house. Two women are living there who make clothes for the people who work in the mines. They invite Susan and Jenny to stay with them but then they tell the Daleks about the two new arrivals. A Dalek comes and takes Susan and Jenny to the mine.

Ian and Larry reach the bottom of the mine. They run into Wells who is part of a work detail. They try to pretend to be part of the work detail but a Roboman, who once was Larry's brother, detects that something is wrong. Larry tries to reason with Phil, his brother, but then Phil starts shooting and when the shooting stops Larry and Phil are both dead.

Ian escapes but sees Susan is part of a work detail. He tries to contact her but she is taken away by one of the Daleks. He tries following her. He hides in what turns out to be a large explosive device that is about to be used to blow a large hoe in the Earth.

Thoughts

I'm not sure how to interpret the title.

I can't say that I'm impressed by the fight scenes. One is with two Robomen, one with the Slyther, and a third between Larry and Phil. The actors look like they are moving in slow motion.

The team on the commentary track is the same as on the previous episode.

I like that they have split the TARDIS team up for most of this story but I don't feel as if they give them enough to do while they are apart. The Doctor and Susan in particular don't seem to have had much to do in the this episode or the previous one. There is something of a budding romance between Susan and David but that's about it.
